Sunday prayers &xnbsp; &xnbsp; &xnbsp; &xnbsp;
&xnbsp; &xnbsp; &xnbsp; &xnbsp; &xnbsp;
Today will be the last Sunday showdown of this Audi MedCup Circuit season, time for TeamOrigin to step up to the plate and see if they can pull back the deficit on regatta leading Emirates Team New Zealand. The sea-state could have a bearing on how today plays out. And in the GP42's three boats head afloat with a share of the lead. &xnbsp; &xnbsp;
Emirates Team New Zealand (NZL) have a lead of 9.5pts over TeamOrigin 1851 (GBR) going into today’s scheduled final three races for the TP52 Series at the Caja Mediterráneo Region of Murcia Trophy off Cartagena. The burning question for the British team is whether they can bounce back to resume the same level of consistency that they were indextaining prior to yesterday’s unfortunate forestay failure which dropped them to the back of the 20 miles coastal race.
The Ben Ainslie-skippered team still acknowledge that they are not as quick when the sea state builds as it did yesterday when the wind topped 20 knots. Matador (ARG) are just half a point behind TeamOrigin, poised to resume the challenge for their second podium of the season, after finishing second to Quantum Racing (USA) in Marseille. In the GP42 Series it is all square at the top. Roberto Monti’s Airisessential (ITA) tops the leaderboard but only on countback. All three top boats, Airessential, Peninsula Pertroleum (GBR) and Madrid-Caser Seguros (ESP) are glued together on 16pts. The schedule of racing is due to get away at 1200hrs today, one hour ahead of usual, and according to the Circuit rules, no start sequence can start after 1530hrs on the final day. That should keep us on schedule for the prize-giving which takes place at 1730hrs. The forecast for the day reckons on somewhere between 10 and 16 knots from between 050 and 090 degrees, but it could be extremely testing with a split in the breeze caused by the breeze accelerating funnelling down the flatlands of Murcia, to the NE of Cartagena then squeezed through the narrow gap formed by the high mountains which flank the city to the west and east. And out to the offshore side of the track, the breeze follows the high, craggy, headland to the NE of the track.
So, for those looking for flat water if the wind stays more in the left then it will suit them, but as it tracks right then the waves will build a little more. This evening’s finale show at the Audi MedCup Public Village will be a flamenco show including Cante de las Minas performance, with a fabulous fireworks display at 2330hrs. “Yesterday was frustrating for us. The coastal races have been really expensive for us this season so far. Hopefully today we can put that behind us and get three good races in. This event is close and of course for the overall season it is even closer for second to fifth, The sea state has a bit to do with it, it’s more important than the breeze. We have a slightly different set up and there is something going on with the design. As always it is a combination of things, a bit to do with the hull shape, some the configuration but we certainly have been struggling in the sea way upwind and downwind. We seem very fast in flat water but it is a trade off. As a team if we could have started off the season knowing what we do now then it could have been great, but we certainly have improved a lot.” Said Ben Ainslie (GBR), TeamOrigin’s skipper this morning.
