Normandy Week 2010
4. November 2009
NORMANDY SAILING WEEK: NORMANDY’S GRAND NEW NAUTICAL MEETING.

Continuing its drive to develop a grand federative nautical event in Normandy (following on from four editions of Deauville Week), SIRIUS EVENEMENTS is launching NORMANDY SAILING WEEK, in partnership with the Town and the watersports protagonists of Le Havre.

The first edition of this annual event will be held from 3rd to 6th June 2010.
Based in Le Havre and the Baie de Seine for 3 to 4 days of racing, the event will bring together the most dynamic one designs and Sportsboats (identical yachts racing on elapsed time), as well as the popular racer cruiser series (various yachts battling it out on corrected time according to a class measurement system), from 6.5 to 15 metres.

The marina in Le Havre, the only open, deep water port in the Baie de Seine, will play host to competitors at the clubs and the Sailing League where the event’s organisational structures and the crew reception areas will be located.

The Upper Normandy Sailing League and the three large clubs from Le Havre – Centre Nautique Paul Vatine – Société des Régates du Havre - Sport Nautique et Plaisance du Havre – which gather together over 3,000 members, will be the direct protagonists of the NORMANDY SAILING WEEK and will form the bulk of the water-based organisation.

A varied race programme will be on offer to suit each series: windward/ leewards around Le Havre, coastal courses around the Baie de Seine, as well as a long race spanning over 100 miles in the English Channel for the Farr 30s. The notice of race for this event is available from today on the website www.normandy-week.com.

Back on shore, a programme of special soirées and musical entertainment will further add to the party atmosphere.

Initially relying on the support of local crews from Le Havre and the Baie de Seine, NORMANDY SAILING WEEK is also part of a unifying approach in the English Channel. The aim of the latter is to play host to crews from right across Normandy, the North of France and the Western section of the English Channel.

The event is also strongly asserting its international vocation, with a renewed call to teams from England, Ireland and Northern Europe in this Commodore’s Cup year. Evidence of this international commitment comes with the presence of international judges, a readiness to play host to overseas teams and promotion amongst the Solent fleet.

The index one design series welcomed to the event are the Farr 30s (9.30 m), which is the craft used for the Tour de France à la Voile, the J80s (8 m), the most active one design class in France, and the First Class 7.5s (7.5m), a federal craft. Providing an illustration of modern sailing trends, the highly sporty, ultra-powerful and ultra quick 6 to 8 m sportsboats, will be represented by the Longtze, K.6.50, Open 5.70 and Laser SB3 series boats.

Added to these, the racer cruisers, competing according to the IRC measurement system, will be represented by craft measuring 7 to 15 m or more, which are suited to both inshore and offshore racing. Indeed, with crews up to 15 persons, other series, with a provision for the big boats, are likely to pad out this list over the coming months.

Talks are currently underway with various sports labels, which are expected to confirm the high level of the competition. These include the French Crewed Championship (Farr 30), French Cup (J80), selection for the French Championship Hopes (F.C.7.5), and the UNCL’s Trophée Manche or Channel Trophy (IRC racer cruisers).

Facilities for yachting are set to be considerably boosted between now and 2012 with the installation of an ambitious water-based plan, the development of the Vauban basin in the town centre and the creation of a business park dedicated to professionals in the marine world. As such, Le Havre will be able to retain its primary role on the regional marine scene and along the English Channel.

A great line-up of competitors, the high standards of the sports organisation, the festive welcome on shore and the charm of Normandy are just a few good reasons not to miss the 1st edition of NORMANDY SAILING WEEK!
