IN DEPTH
After 4 years at Deauville, Normandy’s great race meet has moved just a few
miles along the coast to Le Havre, in order to continue its development. Le
Havre, a town registered as one of Unesco’s world heritage sites for its
architecture, is bringing a free access port and deep water to the event,
along with the support of 3 large clubs and their 3,200 members.
Le Havre’s Société des Régates, founded back in 1838 and the oldest sailing
club in France, will be placing its fantastic club house at the disposal of
the crews involved. Furthermore, there is a direct ferry linking Portsmouth
to Le Havre, just 3 hours away via the high speed ferry. (www.ldlines.co.uk)
The event will take place over 3 days (4 for the Farr 30s) from Friday 4th
to Sunday 6th June 2010, a symbolic date in Normandy if ever there was one.
IRC cruiser-racers, one designs and sportsboats will do battle on the
renowned Baie de Seine race zone within the context of an international
organisation, with international judges and jury. (English is the official
language of the event).
In fact the links between Le Havre and the English fleets have long been
established, with particular reference to the RORC’s Cervantes Race; indeed
Normandy Sailing Week appears in the RORC 2010 schedule (
www.rorc.org / racing / 2010 race schedule ).
A varied race schedule will be on offer according to the expectations of
each series: courses around the harbour of Le Havre and coastal courses in
the Baie de Seine provide a mixed programme for the IRC craft.
80 craft attended the event in 2009, 100 to 130 are expected in 2010, half
of which are IRC.
Last but not least, a sizeable programme to play host to visitors has been
set up on shore in the club’s various infrastructure, just beside the boats:
free crew dinner on Friday evening at Le Havre’s Société des Régates and a
grand soirée, also free of charge on the Saturday at the Palais des Régates,
a fabulous hall on the beach front.
The notice of race and all the information about the event are available on
the website www.normandy-week.com, with
registrations and a crew exchange online.
