Vendée – St-Petersburg
A group arrival of soaked, exhausted sailors
Less than three hours separated the boats between fourth and seventh place, as the pack crossed the
finish behind the three frontrunners. A group finish in heavy rain for sailors, who could not wait to arrive
after suffering difficult conditions with erratic winds in the Gulf of Finland.

There are now only two boats left
at sea. Hervé Cléris’s CLM is due to cross the finishing line not long after his predecessors. The crew on pR2
are having to be a little bit more patient.
Sometimes, it is the final miles that are the most difficult. When you have suffered for hours, becalmed with
no wind, when it starts to get on your nerves, as you attempt daring options, not knowing whether you will
reap any benefit, and have struggled to keep awake, it is only normal that when you see the finish is
coming up, you want the final hours of racing to be over as quickly as possible.
But whatever happens, the sea always has the final word. The Gulf of Finland is offering them its most
inhospitable appearance for the final sprint: light variable north-easterly winds, with rain and cold
weather, reminding everyone just how far north St. Petersburg is. In these conditions, the competitors have
had to show all their resolve to keep attacking or defending their position in comparison to the others,
some using their skill, while others have shown their determination.
The final card played by the team from Aquitaine
Achieving a remarkable comeback, Lalou Roucayrol’s crew (Région Aquitaine Port-Médoc) can feel
extremely pleased with a bold option taken off the coast of Estonia. Reindexing on a tack offering
unfavourable, dying winds, the boat from
Aquitaine chose to continue with this option,
putting to one side the prudent approach, which
suggested heading for the most direct route. They
were onto a good thing, as they sailed along the
coast, as a wind shift propelled them to the front
of the pack competing for fourth place. Behind
them, it was in the end Erwan Le Roux (FenêtréA
Cardinal), who took fifth place, just ahead of
Anne Caseneuve (Naviguez Anne Caseneuve).
Pierre Hingant’s crew, who had a remarkable first
half to the race, ended up dropping back, as the
wind increased in strength. They managed
however to finish within a few hours of the others in
the pack and are looking good for the return leg.
Hervé Cléris is due to arrive soon. So then there will only be the crew of pR2 still at sea. Considering the
conditions they have encountered and as they have not really been able to compete with the rest of the
fleet, Etienne Hochédé, Françoise Hanss and Yoann Tricault are certainly putting up a fight taking it in their
stride and accepting what is thrown at them.
