Vendée - St-Petersburg The Neva never looked so good
A parade in front of the Hermitage Museum… Three trimarans were out sailing on an arm of the Neva between the Peter and Paul Fortress and the left bank. Three multihulls weaving their way around the passenger boats offering the unprecedented scene of boats under sail in the heart of the city. A final break for the crews before they get back into the swing of racing tomorrow with the start of the return leg to Saint-Gilles Croix-de-Vie. The stopover in St-Petersburg ended up being fairly short, as there is so much to discover here. Between learning a few words of Russian, getting to grips with the local customs and the enjoyment of strolling around the streets of what is known as the Venice of the North or in the Hermitage Museum galleries, time has just slipped by like sand through the fingers. Without any doubt, the time spent in front of the Peter and Paul Fortress will have been among the highlights of this short week in Russia. St-Petersburg was celebrating its 307th anniversary this weekend and in spite of the threat of rain, the city was dressed to impress. The crowds turned out on Nevsky Prospect. Visitors came to the city centre to watch the bridges open and the multihulls go by, and these memories will reindex engraved in their minds long after the trimarans have made their way out into the Gulf of Finland. The only setback after this great day on Saturday was that the weather conditions, (strong south-westerlies) unfortunately meant that the crews that planned to take part in the parade of vessels on Sunday had to stand down.

Baltic express
With twenty-four hours to go to the start, the sailors are settling back into their own little world, focusing on the weather charts, running through the check-list one final time and carrying out the last little odd jobs before they set off again… Each crew has its own rituals, its own way of doing things to be fully operational on the big day. During the briefing for the crews arranged today at 4 (local time), noon (GMT), they will find out what sort of weather the multihulls can expect in the Gulf of Finland and after that in the Baltic. Looking at the initial data, it looks like being a quick voyage out to the Oresund. With an east-north-easterly wind blowing between fifteen and twenty-five knots, the sailors should enjoy some thrilling speeds, at least during the first few days of the race. And who knows? They could set a new record time for the 1800-mile voyage from the mouth of the Neva to the Atlantic coast of Vendée.
