Press release No.4 / 2011 – 25th October 2010
THE NORMAN AUTHORITIES COMMIT TO THE NORMANDY CHANNEL RACE
The press conference to launch the NORMANDY CHANNEL RACE 2011 took place
today in Lower-Normandy’s Regional Council in Caen.
Represented at the gathering was the Town of Caen and the urban area of Caen
la Mer, through the voice of its Deputy and Mayor and President Philippe
Duron, Jacques Lelandais the Vice-President of Caen la Mer, the
Lower-Normandy Regional Council represented by its Vice-Presidents Pierre
Mouraret and Marie-Jeanne Gobert, as well as Paul Chandelier, Vice-President
of the Calvados County Council and President of the Departmental Committee
of Tourism. Together they reaffirmed their commitment to the NORMANDY
CHANNEL RACE for the 2011 edition and subsequent editions.
Gathered around a project illustrating their commitment to watersports,
their image, their more dynamic sporting fabric and their support of the
economic industry, the public authorities partnering the event are committed
to developing the ambition they share with organiser Sirius Evénements.
After a promising first edition, everyone involved is now keen to perpetuate
the event in line with several major objectives: to build a great
international nautical event which is a reference in the Channel basin, to
gather those from the area around an event which supports and carries the
image of the activity, to open up the event and rally the general public
around it, as well as to develop the media potential on a regional and
national level thanks in particular to the support of the media partners
(Ouest-France, France 3, France Bleu).
At the point where an outstanding fleet of 46 Class40s is preparing to take
the start of the Route du Rhum in a few days’ time, the selection of the
Class 40 as the craft for the NORMANDY CHANNEL RACE demonstrates both its
pertinence and its potential.
The Chamber of Commerce and Industry and the port of Caen-Ouistreham will
also continue to provide important support on the harbour and marine level.
Furthermore the NORMANDY CHANNEL RACE aims to be the meeting point for the
area’s sports and marine protagonists, the Ligue de Voile (Sailing League),
clubs like the Société des Régates of Caen-Ouistreham (SRCO) and enterprises
from the Norman nautical network (All Purpose - All Mer - Karver Systems –
SNIP – V1D2 - Norlanda). Added to these are the private enterprises present
in Normandy who share the same values as the event, namely a commitment to
performance, solidarity between skippers and a respect for the environment
(e.g. Caisse d’Epargne, Orange, Champagne Mumm, Heineken and Toshiba in
2010).
