TeamGaebler Extreme Sailing News
*Extrem, Crazy and Dramatic.
Sailing at its best on Olympic Waters of Qingdao. 3 Race Wins for TeamGaebler at 2nd Act of Extreme Sailing Series in
China. *
From the first to the last race. This is the way sailing should look. On the
Olympic Waters of Qingdao (China) we cannot count how many stunts we did
with our Extreme40 Catamaran at the 2nd Act of the Extreme Sailing Series.
It was an amazing regatta fully loaded with emotions and dramatic
situations. Sailing in front of the crowds of Qingdao was a great experience
for all of us. The Chinese people have a great passion for sailing.
With winds from very light to strong gusts. We had it all over the last 5
days. And we survived the races in a good shape. We made a great step
forward since Oman.
You all know, we take a local top sailor on our boat. At the Act in China we
join with William Wu from Shanghai. We got two days of Training to make him
fit for the race. It’s a real sportive challenge for all of us. William Wu
went straight into the racing as a bowman on our boat. His job is to set the
giant Gennacker and help at the sheeting of the sails. It’s a very tough
job. Tons of loads are on the sheets and he has to grind it in. He needs
maximum muscle power. He made it very well in a very smart way.
We won 2 races in the Fleet in front of the world best sailing teams. But
also the victory in the race against the ultimate Matchrace Legend Ian
Williams (GBR) was a great result. We got two penalties on him in the
pre-start sequence. We won the race against the Worlds Top Matchracer before
the start. We never thought we can manage something like this.
Again we had a Final day with great results again. Place 2 and 3 and 4 in
this very light breeze is not so bad. Same way we had a premature start in
the last race and finished last. But this is it. Up and down in an extreme
way. Overall we made a huge step forward since the event in Muscat/Oman. The
maneuvers are getting better and better.
But we will never forget the 3 day of this regatta. 4 capsizes on one day.
Major collisions and amazing stunts with the Extreme40 catamarans just
beside us. We were so happy to survive that day of strong and gusty winds. The
pictures are speaking for themselves

Qingdao).
Imagine. This boats are 12 meters long and have a sail area of 180qm. 1.2
tons loaded in carbon. If you get a gust you have just milliseconds to react
of the power of a gust comes.. In the training we nearly capsized. But at
the Race the best sailors did. We are very happy no major injuries were
happen. These boats are rockets and sometime hardly to control.
Same way, we had this shifty and tricky light winds beside the Olympic
Harbour of Qingdao. Very tricky. Once you are in the front. Just seconds
after you are in the back of the fleet. It’s very emotional. You try your
best. But sometime you can do nothing if they passed you.
This is sail racing at its best and we love it this way. And the thousands
of spectators love it also. We like to say thank you Qingdao. This was
really an amazing event and it nice to see your passion for our sport. We
hope to come back next year.
My team did an excellent and brilliant job. Bruno Dobois (CAN), Sebbe
Godefroid (BEL), Nicolas Heintz (FRA) and William Wu (CHN) gave really the
best. Every second. Every day. They performed 110% and made the boat running
fast. It’s a great honor and pleasure to sail with these persons. These hard
workers deserve the trophies. But we are also very proud to have the most
nations on board. This is a real “all-nations-team” has a great spirit. It’s
much more than just sailing. It’s a multi- cultural friendship with highest
passion for our sport.
