Jean-Pierre Nicol ready to take risks between Leucate and Porquerolles
After a port-to-port hop between two grands prix, the Generali Solo is back
in oceanic mode once more, with more than half the championship already in
the wake of the Figaro sailors. As such, this Monday from 1500 hours local
time, the solo sailors will set off on a 250 mile offshore race between
Leucate and the island of Porquerolles. Fourth in the overall ranking,
Jean-Pierre Nicol is very much in the running for a podium place among the
frontrunners in this first event of the French Solo Offshore Racing
Championship. At the helm of Bernard Controls, he knows that the top spots
will be won on inspirational moves, risk taking and mastery.
After a stage in France$B!G(Bs Languedoc region which was synonymous with
technical courses and an omnipresent Tramontana, today$B!G(Bs menu for those
competing in the Generali Solo sees the fleet setting sail from Leucate. At
1500 hours, the race committee will release them on a 250 mile sprint bound
for Porquerolles via a looped coastal circuit off Sainte-Maxime. With the
grib files already dissected by the sailors and their meteorologists -
Sylvain Mondon and friends from the CEM (Mediterranean Training Centre) are
helping Jean-Pierre Nicol - the forecast conditions are fuelling many a
conversation. In light of the latter elements, the race scenario is again
likely to involve them in some deep and rather tricky strategic
considerations: "The situation promises to be complicated with the thermal
set to kick back in shortly and the return of the Tramontana expected early
tonight. As a result it may well be a rather long start to the course. Once
more, conditions are likely to lead to some risk taking. We know that we
can$B!G(Bt do things by halves in the Mediterranean. At this stage in the game,
you do wonder if you should be conservative or attempt something different.
As far as I$B!G(Bm concerned, the answer has come from my sponsor, who is urging
me to take risks today, with all that such a strategy entails. Naturally I$B!G(B
m really going to go for it, stake my all and if it doesn$B!G(Bt work I$B!G(Bll have
to take it on the chin. That$B!G(Bs how I am and I prefer to feel remorse about
something I$B!G(Bve done rather than regret something I$B!G(Bve not done".
Bernard Controls, unfailing support
Supported by his partner in his choices and his direction for the past two
years, Jean-Pierre Nicol knows that he has an enterprising and supportive
team behind him. Present in Leucate to back their sailor, Jean-Yves
Pinvidic, Marketing Manager at Bernard Controls, yesterday shared his
thoughts about the progress of the Breton sailor in this Generali Solo since
the start in Marseille: "We$B!G(Bre supporting Jean-Pierre for the second
season. We$B!G(Bre progressing with him. For the time being this Generali Solo
is going very well and we$B!G(Bre delighted about that. He$B!G(Bs had a few slight
issues inherent with mechanical sports, but it$B!G(Bs formative. He certainly
has nothing to be ashamed about from his results. What I will take away with
me above all is his reaction between Marseille and Leucate where, after a
slight $B!F(Bslip-up$B!G(B and a position at the back of the leading pack, he took a
well-considered but totally different option to that of the others and that
bore fruit. We are right behind him with such an approach. For now the
results have been good and Jean-Pierre is one of the great prime movers in
the race".
At ease aboard Bernard Controls and in all the different phases of play, the
sailor is currently in fourth place in the provisional overall ranking and
has decided that he$B!G(Bs prepared to go for broke to reduce the deficit and
get a firm footing on the podium. Ahead of him lies a 250 mile course which
will see the first strategic positioning taking shape: "At the end of this
stage, there will be just quarter of the event left to go, at which point it
may be necessary to get my head round some calculations...". However for the
time being, the focus will be on making good headway offshore in what will
doubtless be a thrilling race for both the sailors and their supporters
alike.
