Dragon Grand Prix Guyader 2012
4th May 2012
No wind, excellent mood
Racing in the plans tomorrow.

The French saying "Petite pluie abat grand vent" literally means 'a little rain beats back strong winds' (a little effort goes a long way) and it was proven particularly relevant for the weather conditions in Douarnenez today. Yet while the usually sunny bay was not showing its best face, the sailors were still in good spirits even though there was finally no racing for the Grand Prix Guyader

The philosophers?.
Sailors are said to be quiet folk, which does not mean they are bad-natured; in fact it is actually quite the contrary. If the Grand Prix Guyader participants were frustrated about not sailing today, none of them were showing it. Having consulted their 'great weather guru' the meteorological web site 'windguru', the Grand Prix competitors had no great expectations this morning, although the Race Committee held out until midday before calling it a day. The wind was conspicuously absent and it was quite impossible to organize even a short race with the conditions at hand.

A range of expressions and reactions could be heard from the sailors such as, "It's a bit like being a diabetic in front of a cake shop," or, "we won't melt in the rain," - each having their own way of patiently dealing with the situation, knowing that tomorrowthe wind gods should be on their side and provide a good solid day of racing. "They are all sailors," explained Gwen Chapalain, "they know how to adapt to the conditions and it's all part of the game; it's quite normal. The Spanish low pressure system which last week interrupted the Grand Prix with heavy winds continues creating some upheaval for the event, and today we are becalmed".

Francis Joyon, skipper of the maxi IDEC and as good-humored as ever, explained that he had personally come to Douarnenez already knowing that today there would not be any wind, "It's not a big deal, we decided to come anyway, we really like being here." For Erwan Le Roux, the Grand Prix Guyader is one big meeting that has been in his diary for a long time, "This race is quite unique with its speed trials and coastal races. It's a great, friendly event offering a fabulous game park for all those who are really passionate about the sea. Coming to the Grand Prix Guyader is an absolute pleasure that needs no special motivation; nonetheless we hope that the weather conditions are not this temperamental for much longer."
