Kristian Nergaard gewinnt die Symonette Trophy
Die Crew um Kristian Nergaard (NOR 57) übernimmt nach dem Streicher mit einem Tagessieg in der Wettfahrt um die Symonette Trophy und einem dritten Platz im sechsten Rennen die Führung bei der 5.5m IC World Championship in Boltenhagen. Sie verdrängen Flavio Marazzi (SUI 224) von der Spitzenposition. Jochen Schümann (GER 55) hält sich weiterhin auf Platz drei.
Die Symonette Trophy, ein Gedächtnis-Preis zu Ehren des 1998 verstorbenen Olympia-Segler Bobby Symonette von den Bahamas, wird jedes während der Weltmeisterschaft für eine der Wettfahrten ausgeschrieben. Sie soll an den zweifachen Weltmeister und Mitgründer des Nassau Yacht Club erinnern, der von Landsmann Gavin McKinney während der Verleihung als „Motor des Klasse“ beschrieben wurde. Auch Nergard, der Gewinner der Trophäe, kannte Symonette persönlich und teilte mit allen Seglern eine kleine Anekdote über eine 5.5er Regatta am Gardasee im Jahr 1992. „ Ein Flugzeug fliegt nicht mit nur einem Flügel“, soll der Bahamer im Restaurant während einer Startverschiebung auf die Frage geantwortet haben, wie er nach zwei kleinen Flaschen Rotwein noch segeln wollte.

Olympia-Sieger Schümann, der mit der Oro Nero am Mittwoch seinen ersten Tagessieg einfuhr, schätzt seine Chancen auf einen weiteren Weltmeistertitel der 5.5 Meter Klasse eher gering ein. „Ich kann nur noch gewinnen, wenn sich die ersten beiden in einen Zweikampf verwickeln und ganz weit hinten landen, während ich vorne weg fahre.“ Für Nergaard, so rechnet Schümann vor, würde ein weiteres punkteschweres Ergebnis die Folge haben, dass der dreizehnte Platz aus der zweiten Wettfahrt mit in die Wertung aufgenommen wird. Für die Titelchancen der Norweger wäre das fatal, denn sie liegen nur drei Punkte vor den Schweizern. Für diese würde ein Streicher nicht schwer ins Gewicht fallen, da ihr schlechtestes Ergebnis ein vierter Platz ist.

Doch auch Schümann muss vorsichtig taktieren, denn ihr Streicher ist der zwölfte Platz in Wettfahrt vier. Kurz vor dem Start riss es einen der Vorschot-Blöcke weg, der notdürftig mit einem Tampen ersetzt werden musste. „Als der Schaden repariert war und wir endlich starten konnten, waren die anderen schon alle weg“, erzählt der Skipper. Unter diesen Bedingungen das Feld wieder einzuholen und die Wettfahrt trotzdem noch im ersten Drittel zu beenden, zeugt von der Seemannschaft der Crew.
Unter den Evolution-Booten baut die Criollo (GER 30) ihren Punktevorstand weiter aus. Skipper Andreas Christiansen steuerte sein Boot mit zwei 14. Plätzen auch auf Rang 14 im Gesamtklassement. Damit liegt er 33 Punkte vor dem nächstbesten Evolution 5.5er auf Platz 22. Als bestes Classic-Schiff hält sich noch immer Lutz von Meyerincks Blueprint (GER 33), die allerdings um einen Platz in der Gesamtwertung sinkt und nun auf Rang 21 liegt.

Kristian Nergaard wins Symonette Trophy
The Norwegian crew of Artemis XIV (NOR 57) not only won the Symonette Trophy during Wednesday’s 5.5m IC World Championship races but also charged ahead to first position in the overall results after the discard. Flavio Marazzi’s Ali-Baba (SUI 224) drops to second overall and Jochen Schümann (GER 55) is not budging from third place.
The Symonette Trophy is a prize that is awarded during one of the World Championship races each year in memory of Bahamian Bobby Symonette who dies in 1998. He won two world championships, represented the Bahamas at five Olympic Games and according to fellow countryman Gavin McKinney was the “motor of the class”. Nergaard, this year’s winner of the trophy, knew Symonette personally. Instead of giving a speech the Norwegian told a little story about a 1992 regatta at Lake Garda, where the start of the race was postponed several times. The two went to a restaurant and only after Symonette had already consumed two small bottles of red wine the AP was taken down. Questions were raised about how he was going to sail. Nergaard recalls Symonette’s witty answer: “An airplane cannot fly with just one wing.”

Olympic gold medalist Schümann evaluates his chances at another world championship title in the 5.5 Metre class: “I can only win if the two guys ahead of me get into a duel and fall far behind while I stay right at the front.” For Nergaard that situation would be detrimental to his title aspirations as they would have to count the 13th place from race two. The Swiss team which is only three points behind them on the other hand can afford to discard one of the last races as their worst result so far is only worth four points.

But Schümann also has to sail conservatively if he would like to keep his twelfth place in race four as his discard. Just before the start of the race his Genoa block had fallen off and had to be replaced at the last minute. “Once the damage was fixed everyone else had already taken off”, explains the skipper. Given those conditions being able to catch up with the fleet and managing to finish among the upper third is a remarkable result.
Criollo (GER 30) under Andreas Christiansen is slowly climbing in the results. With two 14th places they move up into 14th place overall, with a 33 point lead on the next boat of the Evolution division. Lutz von Meyerinck’s Blueprint (GER 33) drops one place to 21st but reindexs at the top of the Classic division.
