Sweden wins Gold and Percy/Simpson claim Silver
05 August 2012 - Weymouth (UK) After an intense week of racing in the
ultra-competitive Star Class at the 2012 Olympics, Artemis Racing
Tactician Iain Percy (GBR) went into today’s double point medal race
knowing that as a minimum he and Andrew Simpson had the bronze sewn
up. With an eight point advantage over nearest rivals, Robert Scheidt
and Bruno Prada (BRA), and 12 points ahead of Fredrik Loof and Max
Salminen (SWE) who were in third overall, Percy and Simpson needed to
be in the top six to win the gold today in Weymouth.
However, early on in the medal race it was Sweden’s Freddy Loof who
took control of the fleet. Percy and Simpson gave it their best but
couldn’t quite get the edge they needed to clinch the gold medal.
Sweden finished with 32 points to the Brits’ 34. Brazil claimed
bronze.
“We are very proud of Iain and are looking forward to having him join
the team in San Francisco where we are about to begin training for the
34^th America’s Cup,” said Paul Cayard, CEO, Artemis Racing.
“We also congratulate Freddy (Loof) on winning the gold medal for
Sweden. This is a tremendous achievement. Both Freddy and Iain have
shown incredible determination and persistence in the Star and have
achieved great things.”
