15 pages dedicated to the Cup to understand what lay behind the American victory
The afterguard of the American AC72, Oracle Team USA is on the front page of this latest issue of OceanRacing. Our editorial team was ready to talk about the Kiwi victory in the 34th Cup – you can discover the front page we had originally planned, but which had to be changed at the last moment on the night of the 25th-26th September. Simply because we saw one of the most incredible comeback stories in sporting history. Being led 8-1, the American Defender seemed on the edge of defeat. They managed to save seven match points to end up winning 9-8. The prestigious silver ewer will be staying in the U.S. OceanRacing has fully concentrated on what was the most spectacular America’s Cup. A photo album dedicated to the Cup with some breathtaking pictures – in particular, the now legendary moment when ETNZ almost capsized in the eighth race.
Detailed analysis from Christian Karcher and Vincent Lauriot-Prévost
To better understand the outcome of the duel and the revolution that is underway, OceanRacing called in two experts. Christian Karcher, three times winner of the America’s Cup gave his reaction to this historic event. With his six arguments, you will better understand the reasons behind the Kiwi domination in the first part and the Americans’ strength in the second. But how does an AC72 actually work? Another leading expert comes up with the explanation for us: Vincent Lauriot-Prévost, the designer from the famous VPLP team, who came up with the USA17 giant multihull, which won the 33rd Cup in Valencia but also the project for a standard AC72 for Oracle. He gives us his technical perspective on these incredible machines, which are not that easy to get to grips with.
Replay: The 19 matches available on your iPad
OceanRacing has reserved a surprise for you with the possibility to sit back and enjoy all nineteen races in their entirety, as well as the video analyses by Christian Karcher. Experience once again all the thrills of the Big Match.
Class40 and Mini 6.50: what lies behind these two success stories
But sailing is not just the Cup. The longest Transat Jacques Vabre ever – 5400 miles from Le Havre to Itajai (Brazil) – will begin on 3rd November. Once again the Class40 boats will be out in force with 25 competing and a quality line-up. OceanRacing explains just why this class is thriving in spite of the economic situation.
Another success story: the Mini Transat, which starts on 13th October from Douarnenez, will bring together 84 sailors from 14 countries. If you read the second chapter in Nicolas Raynaud’s account, (a former Mini racer) you will better understand why this event is so well established. For so many it all began with Mini racing. There is also a technical analysis of the sails on Minis, which are limited in number and material, but not in size... leaving the solo sailors with some tricky choices. We also look back at the first Mini Transat, which started from Penzance back in 1977 with an interview with its creator Bob Salmon and a touch of British humour.
Investigations and portraits
OceanRacing also looks back at the summer races in France. Firstly, the Solitaire du Figaro, with comments from the twice winner of the event. Yann Eliès explains how he won the first leg using traditional techniques after his computer went wrong in the first few miles. We also give you a portrait of Xavier Macaire, who ended up just behind Yann Eliès to become the revelation of the 2013 event. A keen sailor, who shows determination at sea, while reindexing discreet ashore.
We carry out an investigation into the Tour de France Sailing Race and look at the mixed results of the 2013 edition, where the number of competitors reindexs limited. Racers and organizers give us their ideas for the future.
So a very refreshing issue of Ocean Racing with a lot of new ideas, as well as your favourite features: sound bites, the latest news, new racing boats, the latest gear and of course, some fantastic pictures to accompany our lead articles.
Available now for your tablet and iPad. We hope you enjoy reading this issue,
