Solitaire du Figaro 2013
Jean-Pierre Nicol made it to the top three in the Solitaire du Figaro in the 1500hrs rankings this Tuesday. The furthest south of the 41 competitors, he is quite simply not far off from being in the front. An amazing comeback. The skipper of Bernard Controls moved up 30 places in 24 hours. Incredible...

Jean-Pierre Nicol has sailed a remarkable trajectory. The skipper of the Figaro Bernard Controls has achieved the best trajectory over 24 hours: in just one day, he has gone from 33rd to 3rd place in this afternoon’s 1500hrs rankings. Of course, the first 30 boats are close together and the wind that dropped off as they rounded Cape Finisterre, means that we can look forward to a new start in the next few hours. Nevertheless, Jean-Pierre Nicol has pulled off quite a stroke, which is even more remarkable, given that has had to make do without his big spinnaker, which was torn practically at the start in Bordeaux.
No big spinnaker
It was because he was forced to sail under little spinnaker that the skipper of Bernard Controls tried to avoid losing too many miles on Monday by staying close to the wind in a big tack off to the west. But when the wind strengthened during the night (reaching 30 knots) and there was little difference between using a big and small spinnaker, he got back on track. This morning off Gijon, Jean-Pierre gybed again incredibly well to reindex a little further west of the pack.
Another start for the race 120 miles from Porto?
The strategy has certainly paid off for the moment, as Bernard Controls is this afternoon the furthest south of the whole fleet of this Solitaire du Figaro. 120 miles from the finish in Porto, Jean-Pierre has every reason to hope he will pull it off…
A word of caution: the speeds have dropped right off as they pass Cape Finisterre and begin the long climb down along the coast of Portugal. Bernard Controls is still making 4.5 knots, but the two boats that are ahead of him in terms of the theoretical distance to the finish, in other words, Alexis Loison and Michel Desjoyeaux, are more or less at a standstill sailing at less than 1.5 knots. Will Bernard Controls, 7 miles further east, experience the same thing? Or will he manage to stick in a corridor of air to grab the official lead in the 1900hrs rankings? We’re going to have to keep a close eye on the next rankings to see what happens next in this great trajectory that he has sailed so far. We can expect some surprises, maybe good or bad, as the gaps between the boats are still minuscule: the ten frontrunners are still within a mile of each other.
