Lively racing!
With the First 7.5 fleet also out on the water today, everyone lining up for the eighth edition of Normandy Sailing Week were out on the water. 100 boats racing on three circuits set off Le Havre, enjoyed some lively sailing conditions, with over 35 knots recorded on the IRC’s anemometers and heavy to very heavy seas at Antifer.
The crew of the M34 “Groupama” skippered by Franck Cammas is continuing to steal the show with a 16-point lead over “Courrier Dunkerque 3” skippered by Daniel Souben and 18 over “Bretagne Crédit Mutuel Elite” skippered by Nicolas Troussel. The recent winners of the Volvo Ocean Race are imposing their rhythm then on this first leg of the French Crewed Championship.
“Match The World”, the local J80, is still leading but has seen Maxime Mesnil and his team on “Manche Basse-Normandie” make up so much ground on them, that they are now just a point shy of the top spot! In the other series, there was domination by the local sailors from the Paul Vatine watersports centre, with Glen Hiliquin and Noemie Léger after securing the top two spots in the First 7.5 category, Franck-Yves Escoffier “Hame Hasle” confirming in IRC2, Noel Racine “Foggy Dew” leading in IRC3 and 4 and “Pintia” showing the way in IRC1.
This morning, the pontoons in Le Havre’s small port opposite the venerable Société des Régates, the oldest club in French sailing, were positively buzzing. After a great crew night yesterday, which utilised the dance floor to full effect, the sailors were focused on getting aboard their various boats, from M34s to J80s, First 7.5s, IRCs, J70s and J111s.
Some of them, particularly those in the professional crews, warmed up to ensure they were up and ready for the first manœuvres, while others adjusted their foulies or analysed the weather. At 1000 hours local time, the boats cast off for what promised to be a lively day, with a powerful wind and a pretty big chop. The crews made for their different race zones off the pebble beach to the North of Cap de la Hève. To the South there was an opportunity to have a mini training session before hostilities got underway. The brains of the tacticians and strategists were in overdrive by this point. This preparation is a great way to get an idea of what the wind is up to and which side of the racetrack is working best for the first beat, as well as being an opportunity to size up your competition.
The attention signal sounds and the racers have a few minutes to settle themselves into position on the start line. It’s a clean start, the sails are hauled on and the crew are hanging out over the guardrails. The heartbeats are beginning to quicken, as they do for the start of a marathon. The first change of tack comes up, they switch sides and now they’re onto a beat… The aft-guard announces the upcoming waves, the speed, the course in relation to their playmates… The windward mark is looming. The bowman prepares the spinnaker, the guy or girl on midbow hoists it and they glide through the surf. Everyone is at the back of the boat except for the person trimming the spinnaker sheet who is being careful not to let the edge of the sail collapse.
They’re racing gybe for gybe, in contact as they make for the leeward mark. The fleet is back onto a beat as they set off on another lap of the course and then on to the finish line… The person in charge of food gets out the sandwiches or the ready-meals. It’s a long day and the racers have participated in two circuits, one of which is a coastal course in the IRC category. The Normandy Sailing Week is certainly living up to its reputation as a sporting event for those who love round-the-cans racing and coastal races.
Competitors’ impressions:
Laurent Pagés, M34 “Sodebo 34”: “We had less wind than forecast with 18 to 22 knots. We’re having a slight issue with consistency. With a small fleet like this, you have to have speed among your arsenal and we haven’t quite nailed that. We’re going to have to up our game once the Tour de France à la Voile kicks off”.
Edouard Leveau, crewman aboard the J80 “Manche – Basse Normandie”: “It’s cool. We won today’s two races and we’re fast catching up with the leaders. We’re disappointed that we could only have two races today”.
Eric Brezellec, skipper of the J80 “Interface Concept”: “This sunshine is an absolute delight! The water’s a bit cold though. Still, it’s better than yesterday and we’re gradually finding our reflexes and our clairvoyance above all”.
Nicolas Royant, skipper of the First 7.5 “YCA2”: “Sweet… We stuffed up and got our genoa sheet stuck, but everything was fine elsewhere. It’s a pleasure to take part in this internal challenge event with the League’s clubs. We come from Les Andelys between nearby Evreux and Rouen, and we’re sailing on this type of boat for the first time, which has been loaned to us by the league. Thank you to them”.
Daniel Souben, skipper of the M34 “Courrier Dunkerque 3”: “It’s been a bad day with two fourth places! We’ve been getting into difficulty downwind”.
Cedric Boéri, skipper of the M34 “Toulon Provence Méditerranée”: “We’re here to prepare for the Tour de France à la Voile. We’re frequently switching our crew configuration, which enables us to see how we fair in each position. Aside from “Groupama 34”, which is in a league of its own in this Normandy Sailing Week, I think we’re capable of getting ahead of the others in certain phases”.
Bruno James, skipper of the Sunfast 3200 “Le MC Do de Cherbourg”: “Foggy Dew is a tough crew. We’re not far off the mark but it’s hard going so fast. Like yesterday, we raced a windward-leeward and a coastal course spanning some 11 miles. The seas were really, really heavy and the wind picked up to 35 knots”.
Philippe Rios, skipper of the Grand Soleil 39 “Clezio”: “At the Antifer mark, we had up to 40 knots! The A35s are better in these conditions. We didn’t dare hoist our spinnaker downwind”.
