Barcelona hosts until Sunday the boats of the Generali Solo, the solo regatta taken place in the Mediterranean and with three legs: Cavalaire -sur- Mer – Barcelona; Barcelona - Beaulieu -sur- Mer; Beaulieu -sur- Mer - Sète.
The leading group happened to arrive yesterday morning at the same time as parade of sail from the Mediterranean Tall Ships Regatta which was sailing towards Toulon. Gildas Mahé, onboard Ports d' Azur - Interface Concept, was the winner, followed by Fabien Delahaye with Skipper Macif 2012 and Xavier Macaire onboard Skipper Herault. The 17 Boats moored in front of the Portal de la Pau, next to Moll de la Fusta. Their stopover also coincides with the International Boat Show of Barcelona.
The solo sailors will stay in Barcelona until Sunday 29th, when they will take the starting line of the second leg. While in Barcelona, the 17 skippers will sail two inshore races in front of the city’s coast. The start of leg 2 is scheduled for next Sunday at 13h00.
The Generali Solo is the former Solo Porquerolles first organized in 1990. The race is one of the great classics in the Figaro Class and amongst its winners includes sailors as Jean Le Cam (4 victories), Dominic Vittet (3), Gildas Morvan (3), Jérémie Beyou (2), Yann Eliès (2), Michel Desjoyeaux (1) and Kito de Pavant (1). Like all the class regattas it is raced onboard the Figaro Bénéteau 2, monotypes and built by the same shipyard (Bénéteau). The class circuit consists of a large calendar in the Atlantic and the Mediterranean, both solo and double-handed.
The race is organized by Pen Duick. The FNOB organizes the stopover in Barcelona, the stay of the boats and the arrival and departure of the fleet. FNOB's collaboration with the Generali Solo falls in the context of the development of Barcelona as offshore sailing centre, which is one of the index lines of work of the Foundation. Promoting offshore sailing classes amongst the young sailing solo or double-handed, such as the Mini Class 6.5 and the Figaro Class, it fits squarely within the philosophy of the FNOB and is complemented with the Barcelona World Race to create the essential skippers for the expansion of offshore sailing.
