Sail-World's cruising editor Nancy Knudsen and husband Ted are just about to leave Puerto Isabela in the Galapagos Islands, in company with a number of other world cruising boats, for the Marquesas in French Polynesia, 3,000 nautical miles away.
Nancy will be reporting en route, using Mailasail.com's wonderful HF email compression system. She will be filing voice reports via Iridium satellite phone.
This week we have the second of the Container Boats versus the Sailing Boat series.
Round the World sailor Tony Bullimore is cruising back to New Zealand. Bruce Schwab tell an unusual tale about his visit to an Internet Cafe.

Merchant Royal wreck yields US$500 fortune
Treasure hunters have recovered gold and silver worth an estimated US$500 million from a shipwreck off Cornwall, UK. Florida based Odyssey Marine Exploration has refused to confirm the wreck is the Merchant Royal, however they say 'The artifacts recovered from the site include over 500,000 silver coins weighing more than 17 tons, hundreds of gold coins, worked gold, and other artifacts.'...

Tony Bullimore's Round the World record attempt, started at the Iron Pot at the mouth of Hobart's Derwent River on May 1st and lasted just six days, before a rigging failure pulled the pin, more than 1100m nautical miles south west of New Zealand....

Container Ships and the Cruising Sailor - Part 2
It's the worst conditions so far of our 12-month journey. We're in the narrow Gulf of Suez, it's dark, with about 30kts gusting 40 on the nose -the engine is helping us through the rocky waves. To starboard, there is a two way shipping lane crowded with monsters going both ways. Ahead and all round are oilrigs, grotesque silhouettes blaring white light into the night. To the left and ahead is the coast crowded with the lights of tanker wharves. Green water is coming over the dodger. We have to tack into and out of the shipping lane and between the oilrigs. The radar is on. Our radar reflector is pretty good. Would container ships see us?...

Pirates steal UK cargo ship
Machete-wielding pirates boarded a British cargo ship over the weekend, forced its crew to disembark and stole the ship, the vessel's captain said on Monday. A UN helicopter saw the 3,500-ton ship being towed away and one person was arrested in connection with the incident, UN spokesperson Ben Malor said....

Young Aussie on adventure of a lifetime
Like all of us Dylan dreamed of surfing undiscovered breaks and going where the wind blew. Unlike most of us he made it happen! He flew to the US and purchased 'Bali Hai' a 1968 Cal 34 . Then sailed up The California coast to Morro Bay, a tiny seaside town with a neat Surf culture, where he lived on a mooring for 8 months, while he totally refurbished and fitted her out for open ocean cruising....

Japanese yacht found off Tasmania
A week ago a rescue helicopter winched a 77-year-old Japanese sailor from the ocean off south-west Tasmania leaving his yacht Korasaa77 to the elements. Now its been recovered....
