Hi Dr.Krumnacker,
Sail-World's Cruising World newsletter
Are YOU ready for heavy weather when cruising? While many books cover VERY heavy weather cruising, realistically the blow most weather-aware sailors are likely to experience is rarely more than 50 knots. This week we offer the ten most vital precautions - do they tally with yours?
Out there in the adventuring world, the Blue Water Rally has started superbly, Tony Mowbray and his crew on Commitment are swimming in the Antarctic and would-be solo vertical circumnavigator Adrian Flanagan, frustrated again, has quit for the winter and will complete his journey as early as possible next year.
In the Caribbean the warnings are out about Global Warming, and in Turkey there are big plans to enhance the sailing facilities. In Amsterdam the recent Marine Equipment Trade Show has broken all records and it looks like it is the place to be to see new products in the future - keep it in mind for next year! Not such good news for the Superyacht Boom, which seems to be slowing down.
Lots of other news as usual, so read on, enjoy, and...
Sail Safe!
Perfect Start for Blue Water Round World Rally
The 34 yachts of the Blue Water Round the World Cruising Rally 2007-9 enjoyed perfect conditions for the first leg of their voyage from Gibraltar to Lanzarote. Strong north-easterly winds and a good sea state meant fast passages and for the last two weeks yachts have been safely berthed at Puerto Calero Marina in the southeast of the island....

Windjammers - More Barefoot than Cruising?
Windjammer Barefoot Cruises, for more than 50 years providing tall ship holidays, is giving every indication of being in severe financial trouble. Cruises on November 10, 17, 24 and December 1 on their tall ships have been canceled, but they are saying that the December 8 departure is still going. Corporate watchers are, however, dubious....

This Week's Best New Product - Waterbuoy
We've been attaching corks and other flotation devices to our boat keys for years now, so we were dubious about the value of 'just another flotation device'.... but WAIT!......

When is a Sailing Boat Not Worth Having?
ANSWER: When you've put it onto the rocks so badly that even the salvagers don't want to retrieve it, let alone the owner, who can't be found. Jim Stingl of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel tells of just such a boat you can see any Milwaukee day...

Yacht Tourism ''Lags Behind'' in Turkey
After extolling the virtues of yachting in Turkey for many years now, it ruined my day to read that Turkey's ambitions are to emulate those greedily oriented, over crowded, unfriendly destinations that much of Europe has become. Yachties in the know already return year after year to the magical and (mostly) unspoilt shores of Turkey....

Raja Muda 2007 - long legs and long nights
There's no doubt about it, the Raja Muda Selangor International Regatta is different. This is the only regatta in Asia that offers three offshore passage races, two days of cans racing, a trishaw race and stopovers in four different ports. More than half the entries this year have been here before - some of them many times - and that's a compliment to the status and popularity of the event....
