ELLEN RETURNS TO THE EAST MIDLANDS...
Ellen joined sports stars and the local region's unsung sporting heroes at the BBC East Midlands Sports Awards on Monday night at De Montford Hall in Leicester. It was a warm reception for Ellen on her home territory, as she picked up the Sportswoman of the Year and Sports Personality of the year award for setting a new solo round the world record last February. This Sunday brings the highlight of the awards season with the BBC's Sports Personality of the Year, voting to shortlist the prime candidates closes this Thursday and if Ellen gets through, voting for the awards takes place during the televised ceremony on BBC1 at 8.00pm this Sunday. If you missed Ellen's lap of the Top Gear track as a "Star in a reasonably priced car" on Sunday evening you can catch it again tonight at 1900 on BBC2.

At the BBC TV South Sports Awards on Sunday, Ellen was named Yachtsperson of the Year for her achievement in setting a new solo round the world record in February this year. Held at the Grand Harbour DeVere Hotel in Southampton, the event was attended by over 200 guests and sportsmen and women including sailors Mike Golding and Shirley Robertson. Tonight Ellen will be attending the BBC TV East Midlands Sports Awards. 2005 proved to be an exceptional year for Ellen and her team. Earlier this year a new world speed sailing record was achieved after years of planning and hard work but there was little downtime before the next project came along. But now there is some time for reflection as we look ahead to this winter when Ellen will be in South Georgia and she contemplates her plans beyond 2006. See full story below...

Less than two weeks until the annual BBC Sports Personality of the Year Awards where the BBC honour the sporting stars of 2005. Voting for the shortlist has started via the official website http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/tv_and_radio/sports_personality_2005/
where you can nominate your favourite sports person up until 8th December. Current favourites on the home site include London's bid for 2012 Olympics, Liverpool FC, Chelsea FC, Paula Radcliffe, Andrew Murray and, of course, Ellen for her world record achievement back in February this year. Don't forget though, you have to vote again on the night during the live BBC awards ceremony to be held on Sunday, 11th December...
