Seb Josse Profile
Sébastien Josse already has a very impressive track record and a real international stature. A product of the famous Figaro single-handed class, he quickly moved into the world of IMOCA 60s and threatened the "rock stars" in the 2004 Vendée Globe before hitting a growler (part of a broken iceberg), an incident that compromised his chances of stepping on the podium. Nevertheless, it is a determined and happy sailor who crossed the finish line in 5th position of what was his first solo non -stop round-the-world race. In 2002, Sébastien had been part of Bruno Peyron's crew, capturing the Jules Verne Trophy in 64 days . The young man's third round-the-world journey was to be a major step in his career, since he had been appointed skipper of ABN AMRO 2 for the 2005-2006 Volvo Ocean Race. Being in charge of the Dutch team's "young" crew as all members were 30 years of age or less, Sébastien went on to challenge the race's favorites , among which one could find legendary names such as Paul Cayard or Bouwe Bekking, and broke the 24-hour monohull record with an impressive 562.96 mile run that still holds today. In November 2007 he set out on the double-handed, non-stop round the world race called the Barcelona World Race with previous Vendée Globe winner, Vincent Riou, and were leading the race off South Africa when the boat lost the top of the mast forcing a retirement.

Josse, the Challenger
Sébastien Josse came to sailing whilst cruising off Nice with his family, as he originally comes from the interior of the country and not from the coast. Proof that you can become an excellent sailor without being born in Brittany.

Once Josse had caught the ocean-going bug he did go to Brittany, more precisely to the famous offshore training centre in Port-la-Forêt, and there at the tender age of 22 made his mark by winning the Sailing’s Young Hope challenge in 1997.

So he took to the helm of a Figaro for a season and everything fell into place: he became the young hope French Figaro Champion in 1998, came 4th in the first leg of the 1999 mini-transat, and 2nd in the 2001 Solitaire du Figaro, winning one of the legs. Even Josse surprises himself at this succession of results: “I didn’t know that I would have such a competitive streak. For me, sailing is all about the voyage, and yet I find myself wanting to win whenever I am racing.”

One of his dreams has already come true when Bruno Peyron chose him to be one of the record-breaking crew on board Orange for the Jules Verne Trophy, and now he is one of the fastest men around the planet.
His discovery of the southern ocean just overwhelmed him: “This experience persuaded me that I could compete in the Vendée Globe.” This RTW record also convinced VMI, his new sponsors and they acquired the Open 60 on which Thomas Coville raced to 6th place in the last Vendée Globe and won the 1999 Transat Jacques Vabre with Hervé Jan.

Sébastien Josse arrives at the start of the Défi Atlantique to win his ticket for the next Vendée Globe – it seems that Josse is blessed, if he wants to do it, he will…
