News update from Kingfisher Challenges to Dr Krumnacker
Segel.de
* For UK television viewers don't miss BBC1, this Thursday at 2110, Ellen's Vendee story.
* Mike Golding had a tough night again with strong and gusting winds of over 40 knots and a horrendous sea - forcing him to lowering his indexsail completely for the first time in the race. At 0800 this morning Golding was 285 miles from the finish and estimating that he would arrive at the line in the early hours of tomorrow (Wednesday) morning - which considering his late departure from Les Sables after his dismasting on Day 1 would mean his elapsed time is 4th fastest in the race. A quite amazing performance. You can watch the finish live on the web, just visit http://www.teamgroup4.com and follow the Vizzavi links.
* Josh Hall (Gartmore/EBP) is expected on Thursday along with his rival for these final thousand miles Bernard Gallay (Voila.fr). Catherine Chabaud (Whirlpool) is expected Friday, having had to stop in La Coruna to shelter from a vicious storm in Biscay. With her jury rig mast, making progress against a Biscay storm is not that easy. Its a harsh way to have to finish her second Vendee Globe event, but regardless of the fact that she is no longer officially in the race the Vendeen welcome in Les Sables d'Olonne will be something special - that you can assured of.
* Thierry Dubois completed his tour on Monday, unfortunately out of the race due to his stop in NZ, and quite marked by his second attempt at the Vendee Globe (from www.vendeeglobe.com) - "At least I was lucky enough to finish sailing in downwind conditions!"
"Thanks for all of you being here, it's true I was thinking of
sailing straight home (Ed: La Trinité Sur Mer)Šthanks again,
but really my dream is a little shattered.
"The upwind climb was hard, if I'd listened to myself perhaps I
would have stopped to avoid breaking the boat. When
Catherine dismasted, I was really afraid of the same thing
happening to me. Yes I did get up the Atlantic pretty quickly,
but it was as fast as I could have gone, I wanted to get the
boat home in one piece.
"My satisfaction comes from the fact that I followed through
my project to the end, but I haven't got any sporting
satisfaction out of itŠIt takes a lot of money & energy to get
to see Cape Horn.
* Ellen hopes to be is Les Sables to welcome back these three skippers, before heading off to take a few days holiday. She'll be back in Paris next weekend, when 'Kingfisher' is due to arrive on a barge on the River Seine. 'Kingfisher' was lifted out yesterday, the mast was taken down, and the keel removed today. She's looks to be in good shape.
BBC1 SCREEN THE ELLEN STORY
At 2110 this Thursday on BBC1 are screening a 50 minute feature of Ellen's Vendee Globe story. Put together primarily from previously unseen footage that Ellen recorded by herself onboard, the film should take you close the heart of the experience - and through the emotional ups and the downs of the race. Don't miss it!
A video is also in production that will be available later in the Spring.
