Emma Richards is currently taking part in the world’s longest, and most gruelling, yacht race, Around Alone. The race, which is split into 5 legs, started in New York on 15th September 2002.
Richards, 28 from Hamble, Hampshire, set sail on Monday 14th October 2002 on the second leg of the round the world yacht race, from Brixham, England to Cape Town, South Africa. She is sailing on her 60-foot yacht ‘Pindar’, named after the British-based print and electronic media company who sponsor her, and is currently in second position.
Around Alone is an eight month, 29,000 mile marathon that is the longest and toughest race for any individual in any sport. After the reindexder of the second leg and a brief stop-over in South Africa, Emma and her 11 male competitors will sail on to New Zealand and Brazil before finishing back in the US in April 2003. In all, she will have almost 180 days at sea.
Emma, who is the sole female entry, the youngest competitor by over five years, and also the only British entry in Around Alone, is not just aiming to survive…she has her heart set on glory. Emma has already made history in the first leg of the race from New York to Torbay when she became the first woman to complete a single-handed west to east transatlantic crossing in a monohull. Richards completed her transatlantic crossing in 13 days, 14 hours and 6 minutes, and finished in fourth place.
