First anniversary of the start of Around Alone 2002
Lonely Planet tells the compelling stories of the 13 intrepid adventurers - including one woman - as they compete in the Around Alone 2002-03 solo, round the world yacht race, the longest ever race for an individual in any sport.
On September 15th, 2002, 20 years after the first edition of this historic yacht race, and in commemoration of the tragic events of September 11th, these 13 brave skippers, representing 10 different countries, set off together from beneath 'Ground Zero' in New York Harbour, on the first of five legs, which would take them on an incredible 28,000 mile marathon sprint, stopping in England, South Africa, New Zealand and Brazil before finishing in Newport, Rhode Island 8 months later.
You will get to know a band of competitors who, in the course of their solo circumnavigation, become closer than brothers: including a Bermudian Hotel Manager, a diabetic and an ex-Mountie, both from Canada, one text-book salesman and one ex-pilot from America, a French human rights campaigner and veteran circumnavigator, an Italian poet, a Japanese adventurer, a Swiss record-breaker, as well as the only 'sister' and youngest skipper from Great Britain.
Live through their personal triumphs and disasters on the high seas as their every exploit and emotion are exposed on film, mostly recorded by the skippers themselves on board the yachts as they discover their own ultimate desires and fears along the life-changing journey around the globe in 'Lonely Planet'.
In Memoriam: this documentary gives tribute to Italian skipper Simone Bianchetti, who tragically died two months after finishing 3rd in Around Alone on his Open 60 'Tiscali'. The sea will miss him...
5-OCEANS: THE NEW NAME & FORMAT FOR AROUND ALONE 2006
Newport RI, USA – 15th May 03. Following a review of the Around Alone 2002-03 yacht race, race organisers Clipper Ventures plc, along with leading sports marketing company Fast Track, have today unveiled an exciting new format for the next edition in 2006, which will be renamed 5-Oceans.
A new name was needed to signal the re-launch of the race, which comprises 5 major ocean crossings. The new name was therefore a natural choice, one that clearly described the extreme challenge and global nature of the event, worked well in English and French, and generated positive value associations.
A new format for the 5-Oceans
Route
· The 5-Oceans will start either in France or on the Eastern seaboard of the USA in Q3 2006
· The route will comprise 4 stopovers of no more than 3 weeks duration
· The reindexing stopovers will be South Africa, Australasia, South America and either USA or France
· Winning host ports will be announced at the Paris Boat Show 2003
Commenting on the changes, Clipper Chairman, Sir Robin Knox Johnston said: “In May 2001, Clipper Ventures plc acquired Around Alone and thereby secured its future in the offshore ocean racing calendar. The last 8 months has given us the chance to review the future for the race and ask skippers, ports, media and sponsors what they feel we should do differently next time. Their advice has been clear; stay focussed on safety, shorten the duration of the race, reduce campaign costs for skippers, and put more resources into the event through attracting more sponsorship and media interest We feel that the changes announced today have gone along way to responding to these requests”
Commenting on the new format, David Stubley, Managing Partner of Fast Track and Chairman of the race Advisory Board said: “The key issues highlighted by the strategic review and proposed changes have been presented to the race Advisory Board and I’m delighted to say that the blueprint for 2006 has secured its full support. The 5-Oceans 2006 offers an outstanding global marketing platform for sponsors to build their business. We hope to have some good news in this regard very soon. The challenge now, is for skippers to throw their hat in the ring.”
Mike Golding, as a representative of the skippers on the Advisory Board, responded: “Over the past twenty years this race has been the standard bearer for single-handed ocean racing and the changes that have been made will modernise the event and make it even more attractive to solo sailors keen for the ultimate challenge. I for one will be seriously considering entering the 5-Oceans in 2006.”

"Held every four years, Around Alone is the longest race for any individual in any sport, spanning some 28,800 miles of the world's roughest and most remote oceans. Out of the current five round the world yacht races, only Around Alone and the non-stop Vendée Globe are single-handed. However, Around Alone is the only race that starts and finishes in America, and which, due to its multi-leg structure, boasts the most international field of entries, with 15 countries represented since the race began in 1982...."
