JOHN DENNIS AND BAYER ASCENSIA FINISH AT 00:45:06 LOCAL TIME (23:45:06 UTC) ON 4TH OCTOBER
Canadian skipper John Dennis, the ‘grandfather’ of the Around Alone fleet at 57 years old, brings his Open 50 Bayer Ascensia across the finish line in Torbay - another night-time arrival - to the welcome of the other Class 2 competitors already in port: Brad Van Liew, Derek Hatfield and Tim Kent. After a transatlantic three-way battle between fellow Canadian Derek Hatfield in Open 40 Spirit of Canada, and American Tim Kent on Open 50 Everest Horizontal, Dennis takes fourth place in Class 2. Despite John's diabetes, he has managed to keep up the pressure and race hard against his competitors right to the finish in this first leg of Around Alone without any problems - an inspiring achievement in itself.
