AROUND ALONE LATEST NEWS FROM TORBAY, ENGLAND

The community of Torbay have truly embraced the Around Alone skippers, teams and organisation for the last two and a half weeks, giving a welcome which will stay with them all for the rest of their solo round the world race. As Brixham prepares to say farewell to the race, the whole town is buzzing with activity for this last weekend in preparation for the restart on 13th October.

Leg 1 Overall Rankings
The overall positions and points for both Class 1 and 2 in the first leg of Around Alone 2002-03 have now been officially confirmed as follows:

Garnier retires after Leg 1.
‘Garnier’, skippered by Belgian Patrick de Radigues, is retiring from the race. Therefore there will be 6 boats in Class 1 on the start line of Leg 2. Sir Robin Knox-Johnston commented “Patrick will be missed, he was doing so well, even he was hoping to continue. However his sponsors decided to change the programme of the boat in order to meet their marketing objectives, which were more focused in France.”

Cape Town stop-over extended
Race Organisers Clipper Ventures announce today that the Cape Town stop over is to be extended by one week, therefore moving the restart date to 8th December 2002. This decision was made after examining the forecast Atlantic weather patterns, which will mean a slower passage to Cape Town.

Raymarine Press Breakfast – 10:30am 11th October
Raymarine, official supplier of the Race Management System for Around Alone, are hosting a Champagne breakfast for media at the Berry head Hotel from 10:30 – 11:30 am on Friday 11th October before the Around Alone press conference.

Around Alone Press Conference and Photocall – 11:30 11th October
Clipper Ventures presents the Around Alone race, the Torbay restart and the 12 skippers setting off on Leg 2 from Torbay to Cape Town. The press conference will be held at the Berry head Hotel between 11:30am – 12:30pm.

FICO drinks and buffet – 12:30 11th October
Following the press conference, FICO invite you to stay on for drinks and a light buffet at the Berry head Hotel with the Around Alone skippers between 12:30 – 13:30pm.

AROUND ALONE AWARDS DINNER AT THE IMPERIAL HOTEL, TORQUAY, OPEN TO PRESS FROM 20:45pm

Torbay Restart, 12pm on 13th October 2002
There will be a service held by the Fishermens Mission at 07:45am on the pontoons for half an hour to send of the skippers. The boats will start moving out from 9am from the Brixham Marina.
The start line will be 200 yards off the edge of the Brixham Harbour breakwater. The fleet will follow an inshore course first, keeping to starboard three Brixham trawler boats moored across the bay, and then head out to sea bound for Cape Town, South Africa, 6,880 miles away.

Around Alone 2002-03 takes the fleet from New York to Torbay (England), then Cape Town (South Africa), Tauranga (New Zealand) and Salvador de Bahia (Brasil), before returning to Newport in April 2003. The official entry list of competitors consists of 12 competitors from 9 different nationalities; 6 in Class I and 6 in Class II.
