BIANCHETTI: A TOUGH MAN MAKING TOUGH DECISIONS
Yesterday, the race organisation received the good news that Simone Bianchetti and Tiscali would continue in Around Alone. The 34yr old Italian skipper commented then: "We'll do everything possible to repair the damages and start again. Our determination, Tiscali's and mine, is still intact. I have no other choice than keep fighting."

It has been a full 5 days since the unfortunate dismasting happened just 90 miles off Northern Spain. Every hour of every day is precious for the skipper, shore team and sponsor, for them to carry out a thorough investigation of the damage, find a replacement mast, and assess the repairs to be done. For this process to be done properly, all options must be carefully weighed, some pretty tough decisions need to be made, and a lot of logistics and materials need to be organised. It inevitably does take time, something which Simone and his team do not have on their side, as his index rivals are hurtling down the North African coastline.
Mentally prepared to be fighting battles out at sea, instead this strong-headed Italian skipper will have been battling initially with his emotions of frustration and despair, which since then he has day by day managed to conquer and control through his utter determination to continue in the race.
And Simone and Tiscali are still very much in the race, and still have time to sail the boat down to Cape Town in order to make the start on December 8th alongside the other Class 1 competitors for the third Southern Ocean Leg to Tauranga, NZ.
This is one of the compelling stories in the unfolding history of Around Alone 2002-03, which we hope you will follow in support of Simone. You'll be sure that all the other skippers will be on the dock to welcome him in to Cape Town.
Here is one image of Tiscali tied to the dock in Carino, Northern Spain (taken from a video film), her deck still awash with bits of mast and rigging.
