LEG 2: VAN LIEW PROVES TOMMY HILFIGER FREEDOM AMERICA IS FASTEST 50-FOOTER IN THE WORLD

CLASS 2 LEADER VAN LIEW’S ETA IN CAPE TOWN: WED 27TH NOVEMBER

Southampton, England – 25th November. Forty-one days after setting sail from Torbay, England on Leg 2 of the Around Alone 2002-03, American Brad Van Liew, current Class 2 fleet leader, shattered the 50-foot monohull 24hr record with 345 miles as he entered the Eastern Hemisphere. Starting at 0300 UTC on November 23rd and running through 0300 UTC on November 24th, Van Liew logged 345.03 miles on his solo journey. This qualifies as the top mileage ever recorded for a 50-foot monohull vessel under sail, solo or crewed. He toppled the previous record of 333.6m set by J.P. Mouligné, previous 1998/9 Around Alone winner of Class 2, by more than 11 miles during an exhilarating weekend of sailing across the Prime Meridian (0 degrees longitude). This hard won accomplishment was a crusade for Van Liew after he kissed the record twice, hitting 333.5 twice during the race so far.
“It feels awesome to tackle this goal,” said Van Liew. “In the spirit of the upcoming college ball games, I have sacked the quarterback, recovered the fumble and I am sprinting to the end zone for a touch down. The finish line is 400 miles away and Tommy Hilfiger Freedom America is 800 miles ahead of the competition. To top it all off, my family is waiting in Cape Town with a grand Thanksgiving feast. Could life be any more perfect?”
Leg 2 of the Around Alone race has sent Van Liew through a myriad of conditions at sea, and through every hemisphere of the planet. He has pounded through hefty headwinds and violent seas, wallowed at the equator, and endured massive squalls that socked him sideways in the Doldrums. At one point Van Liew crash jibed the race boat, laying Tommy Hilfiger Freedom America flat on her side to be greeted by the seven-foot erect dorsal fin of a whale. Next was a daring climb up the 80-foot mast for repairs. It has been an eventful leg and Van Liew has been unrelenting in his quest to win.
