OCEAN PLANET COMES IN OUT OF THE RAIN
MEDIA INVITATION TO AROUND ALONE PRIZEGIVING ON 'SAS DRAKENSBURG' ON 29TH NOVEMBER
ETA NEXT BOATS: SUNDAY 1ST DECEMBER

CAPE TOWN, ENGLAND - 28th November. It was in a gloomy pre-dawn light that Bruce Schwab finally sailed his Open 60 Ocean Planet across the finish line in Cape Town at 05:15:16 hrs local time (03:15:16 GMT). Earlier the skies had been clear and Bruce reported seeing the spectacular sight of table Mountain from afar, but no sooner than he had cross the finish a light, persistent drizzle started. It was a wet ending to a long, arduous passage that lasted on the water 44 days and 15 hours, including the 5 day stop in Bayona, Spain with the rest of Class 2.
Californian Schwab freely admits that he is still getting to know his Tom Wylie designed boat. The fifth place finish in Class 1 for this leg does not bother him. "I knew leaving England that I would be behind the other Open 60s," he said. "I still had work to do on my boat after replacing the boom, and once I stopped in Spain I was out of contention anyway." The rest of the leg was spent in a close race against fellow American Brad van Liew on Tommy Hilfiger Freedom America. "I enjoyed racing against Brad. He is very experienced and helped a lot with weather and tactics. It was great to have someone like him to race against. I look forward to the next leg when I can get back in the mix against the rest of my class and really show them what Ocean Planet is capable of."
His sparring partner, American Brad Van Liew, arrived in Cape Town on the 27th November, victor of Leg 2 on Open 50 Tommy Hilfiger Freedom America, at 03:15:16 GMT, taking a total of 44 days 16hrs 15m 16s on the water. NB: both Bruce and Brad's elapsed times are provisional, and do not include the 48 hour time penalty for stopping in Spain.
The next two heading towards the finish are Tim Kent on Everest Horizontal and Derek Hatfield on Open 40 Spirit of Canada. Tim dove way South to keep in the pressure and on the pace, pushing his lead out to now 186m from Derek. Hatfield was upbeat about the final run to the finish: "Tim and I exchanged emails late last night to wish each other a great finish. Tim has some miles on me but at the same time, I have a better angle for the approach to Cape Town. I'll fight hard to finish first. Kojiro is also a threat to me now as he has made it to the bottom side of the high and will have some great sailing angles towards the finish. His boat is excellent off the wind. What a great race this leg has been!" It should be an interesting finish for the both of the North Americans tailed by the Japanese Open 40 Spirit of yukoh suddenly showing her true colours, to see which boat comes through first after such a close battle throughout the whole of the leg.
