Hat Trick for Brad in the Around Alone
Brad Van Liew on Tommy Hilfiger Freedom America sailed into Tauranga, New Zealand claiming his third consecutive win for Class II in the Around Alone 2002/03 race on Thursday 16th January January at 02.05.56 GMT (15.05.56 local time) after 32 days, 14 hours, 5 minutes and 56 seconds at sea. Brad's commanding lead stretched to over 1,000 miles over fellow skippers as well as catching up some of the Open 60 sailors in Class I.
Brad Van Liew is not only one of the US's premier offshore sailors, he is also a commercial multi engine pilot holding the Federal Aviation Agency's top aeronautical licence. This combination of navigational and weather interpretation skills have made Brad the perfect candidate to put Raymarine's fully integrated range of marine technology to the test during the fiercely competitive solo sailing Around Alone race.
The practice of fitting independently operating twin electronic systems is a must on board large commercial aircraft. Brad has followed the same philosophy on his Open 50 racing yacht Tommy Hilfiger Freedom America and has had the two identical marine electronic systems, one on the port side and one on starboard, built in by Raymarine for redundancy purposes.

The work-station on board Tommy Hilfiger Freedom America is the nerve centre at which Brad spends most of his below deck time studying new weather downloads. Raymarine's RayTech 4.1 Sail Racer software provides a navigational system and analyses performance data from the boat, enabling Brad to dry run his ideas on optimum weather routing.
