The Route du Rhum 2002: Press Release N° 34
The Rhum in Small Sips

The Route du Rhum has always been open to everyone, famous or otherwise. Just getting over to the other side of the Atlantic is an achievement in itself. This year’s Route du Rhum was marked by the breakage and capsizes in the trimaran fleet, but there is also a smaller version multihull, the 50-foot class, who weathered the storm without serious breakage. After sunrise in Guadeloupe Anne Caseneuve passed the finish line on her 50-foot trimaran Yachting Casino.com, more than a day behind the winner of the class, Franck Yves Escoffier on Crepes Whaou!. Both were sailing without autopilot the last days of racing, and were exhausted once on dry land. Australian Nick Moloney is expected to cut the finish line Thursday morning GMT, winning the 50-foot monohull class, and will be the first Australian in history to complete the Route du Rhum.

Antoine Koch’s L’Heautontimoroumenos crossed the finish line of Pointe à Pitre at 02.28 GMT today, fifth in the Open 60 monohull class. This was a first solo on a 60-foot monohull for the 24 year old Frenchman. This morning local time Patrick de Radigues on Garnier Belgium, from Belgium, glided across the line, sixth in the same class.
Some hours earlier Anne Caseneuve completed the Route du Rhum at 1112:07 GMT, taking second in the 50-foot multihull class on her homemade Yachting Casino.com, an interesting construction made up of bits and pieces from old 60-foot trimarans. The boat held out well in the storms but the last days of the race her autopilot was not functioning, and the only women finishing this Route du Rhum on a multihull, was extremely tired when she arrived in Guadeloupe. The class 2 multihull winner Franck Yves Escoffier was penalised by the race committee for rounding the “Phare des Baleines Sud” marker the wrong way. However, the 12 hour penalty imposed, did not affect his position as winner and he has also beaten his personal best time in previous Rhums.

Yesterday Miranda Merron aboard Un Univers de Services was sailing beam to beam with a cruising catamaran, Born Free, keeping her company in the big blue. “Pity that the Rhum is single-handed as the 7 guys swamping the catamaran could have come in pretty handy,” said the Briton skipper in yesterday’s radio chat session. Last night Miranda was hit by a big squall lasting for two hours with pouring rain. She took in 40 litres of freshwater, collected in the indexsail reef. Enthusiastically she grabbed the moment and had a much appreciated freshwater bath in her indexsail! Miranda Merron is very tired “I’m having real trouble waking up at the moment. I hear the first alarm, the second a little less and the third not at all!” The squalls do not make the situation easier, the choice of sails is very difficult in the shifting conditions. Miranda Merron is expected to cross the finish line early Friday morning as eighth 60-foot monohull, ahead of Mike Birch, Patrick Favre and George Leblanc.
If all goes smoothly Nick Moloney will cross the finish line tomorrow morning Thursday 28 November and so becoming the first Australian to complete the Route du Rhum, and above all win it! At 1500 GMT Moloney was 112.6 miles from sweet victory of the 50-foot monohull class ahead of five more competing in the category and three who abandoned. With the current ETA for Ashfield Healthcare, Moloney will beat the previous record in the 50-foot monohull class, set by Offshore Challenge colleague and this year’s winner of the 60-foot monohull class, Ellen MacArthur, who in 1998 completed the Route du Rhum on a 50-footer in 20 days, 11 hours, 44 minutes, and 49 seconds.

Overall rankings Basse-Terre buoy to finish line.
Since the first edition, this race within the race, initiated by the Chamber of Commerce and Industry in Guadeloupe, which has funded a total of 20 000 Euros, has been very highly valued by the skippers. The distance of this course is 25.4 nautical miles and two rankings exist: monohulls and multihulls without distinction of class.
