PIECE OF RHUM HISTORY:
In 1990 Florence Arthaud crossed the finished line first scoring an almost unbelievable victory: 31 boats started the 4th edition of the Route du Rhum race including French sailor Florence Arthaud racing her trimaran Pierre Ier. Arthaud faced problems early on in the race when her Nagrafax machine failed depriving her of any weather maps and was only able to receive telex messages from her weather router. She then suffered a solo sailor's worst nightmare when her autopilot system failed - Arthaud roped herself to the helm for 2 days as a northbound depression zeroed in on the fleet. Finally her electrical system failed completely, she had no radio nor telex, cut off from her weather router and the rest of the world. A serious haemorrhage nearly forced Florence Arthaud to trigger her distress beacon but she did not. She carried on - the seas and the skies deciding her route. 14 days, 10 hours and 8 minutes Arthaud crossed the finish line and became a legend.
