Welcome to Oryx Quest 2005
Doha, Qatar 1 February 2005
Crown Prince HH Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani.
From the important trade in pearls through the far-reaching exchange in valuable crimson dye, lapis lazuli, and precious metals, to today's booming oil and gas industry, Qatar's involvement with the sea has always been close and beneficial.
The tradition continues this February as Doha witnesses the start of Oryx Quest 2005: the first non-stop race around the world to start and finish in the Middle East. This event features maxi multi-hulls, the worlds fastest and most high-tech yachts and ocean racers.

Vorstellung der neuen Doha 2006
|
As the eyes of the world turn to Doha to share with us the start of Oryx Quest 2005, it gives me great pleasure to welcome to Qatar the skippers and teams who will be taking part in this record-breaking event.
These are brave men and women whose qualities of courage and endurance, enabling them to persist in the face of extreme challenge, stand as an example to us all. As they depart from Doha, as so many noble seafarers have done before them, on February 5th 2005 we will give them a proud send-off and warm memories to propel them through the seas until they return again some 50 days later.
Qatar is a proven expert at organising world-class sports events and we have a track record of which we are justifiably proud - our generous and hospitable culture and our reputation as a centre of sporting excellence combine to attract the world's sporting best. Oryx Quest 2005 is no exception; state of the art yachts, skippered and crewed by sailing's elite will, without doubt, set new world records in this, the world's fastest yacht race.
We wish them well and will be watching with interest as they brave the frozen southern seas and jockey for leadership position. They can be assured of a warm hero's welcome on their return in true Qatari style, as they write a new page in sporting history and build further Qatar's proud maritime tradition.
