Lining up in the Straits of Hormuz

After a rapid first night zigzagging between the oil fields and the restricted areas, close to the Doha2006 catamaran, the crew of CapGemini / Schneider Electric met up with all the other crews this morning on their way out of the Straits of Hormuz, where they were all becalmed.

Cheyenne seemed to have finally awoken with the steady breeze in the night and got up level with the leaders. Even the English crew with Tony Bullimore came within sight of the French boat. Towards midday, the four boats were more or less grouped together on an east-west line, with Cheyenne closest to the Iranian coast and Daedalus closest to the Arab peninsula.

Commenting this morning, Olivier de Kersauson said: “On a day without wind like today, you lose two kilos in sweat trying to get out of the calm, if you’re trying for the record! Here, however, we could see that the others had hardly enough wind to keep on their bearing, so that is some sort of relief to us. It gives us pleasure to see them stuck in the same mess as us. So we’re pleased to be racing against each other!"

They are all expecting the light, but all-important south westerly wind generated by the slow-moving high in the north of the Indian Ocean to return.
