PRESS RELEASE of 02/22/2005
A race against the clock

Geronimo is due to arrive in Perth at around 15:30 French time today. As soon as the Capgemini/Schneider Electric trimaran comes alongside in the Freemantle marina, the relentless countdown begins... The meeting with the tug will take place at a buoy off Freemantle. Geronimo has no on-board engine, so there will also be a number of inflatables on hand to help with the tricky mooring manoeuvre. A 40-metre berth has been cleared to take the damaged trimaran. Project Director Louis Noël Vivies arrived on site 48 hours ago, since when he has been coordinating operations with the committed support of a highly professional team. The challenges and consequences of such a technical stoppage can only be measured once Geronimo arrives in the America's Cup host port.
Whatever happens, everyone must first wait until the damage has been fully assessed before anyone can estimate how long the trimaran will be stuck in Australia. The first step is the planned ultrasound scan of the float: depending on its outcome, repair work can then begin straight away. Naturally, every resource is ready and waiting on the quayside to make sure that those repairs are completed in the shortest possible time (vacuum pump, carbon fibre, tent, etc.). Geronimo's crewmembers will also be working alongside the local team; as all-rounders, they have worked on the trimaran over several years and have been involved in every upgrade and refit.

“Time is running through our fingers like sand”, said Olivier de Kersauson earlier today. This persuasive and realistic image is all too real out on the water. The other Oryx Quest competitors are now galloping away at some speed, and every hour that passes makes the race against the pitiless clock even more of a challenge.
