Cheyenne Dismasted
No injuries, but challenge for the Oryx Quest 2005 finishes in disappointment
Puerto Deseado,Argentina:
Racing upwind just one day after rounding Cape Horn and in hot pursuit of Brian Thompson's Doha 2006, at approximately 1030 GMT Wednesday morning the 125' maxi-catamaran Cheyenne suffered a breakage of the lower shroud and a buckling of her 145' carbon fibre mast. No one on board was injured. Currently about 200 miles north of the Falklands, Skipper David Scully has supervised the cutting away of the tumbled mast and rigging and has arranged for a tow into the nearest port, probably Puerto Deseado in Argentina. The Oryx Quest 2005 round the world race is now over for Steve Fossett's maxi-cat - the most successful boat in the history of speed sailing.

Steve Fossett was at his Colorado, USA base when he got the news earlier today and immediately began to help with arrangements for the recovery of the boat and for crew members to return home.
He commented: "Well of course this is a huge disappointment for the crew, who have put so much time and effort to race competitively round the world. I feel badly for them, but I am happy there were no injuries."
