IN DETAIL:
OC Events and the FNO, organisers of the new Barcelona World Race, have made two further key appointments to help drive forward the continued recruitment of top-level entries from around the world and provide support to sailors planning participation in this double-handed, non-stop round the world race starting 11th November 2007.

The appointments of both Welcome on Board and Christine Salén start with immediate effect.“We are putting 100% into making sure that come the 11th November 2007 we will see a line-up of some of the best names in ocean racing on the start line of the Barcelona World Race. Christine has a range of invaluable experience to assist the professional sailors in getting to the start of the race, and she will be well supported in France by Welcome on Board who will also help to deliver the all-important media return in France where, of course, a good number of the top-level entries will originate from,” commented Mark Turner, OC Events.

Linking up potential projects, boats and sponsors will be a key aim of the Commercial Support Team, headed up by Christine and supported by a wide range of competences back at OC Events HQ in the UK. This is further backed up by the comprehensive Pre-Registration Sales Kit available online at http://www.barcelonaworldrace.com/en/?s=preregistration which arguably goes further than any other ocean race has done before in terms of providing sponsorship acquisition materials.

Christine Salén (formerly Christine Guillou)
Job description: Commercial Manager (Teams)
Christine is well known to both the short-handed sailing fraternity and the fully crewed world having competed at the top level in both disciplines. French by birth but now based in Sweden, Christine was skipper of the female crew EF Education in the 1997/98 Whitbread Round the World Race (now the Volvo Ocean Race) and has also competed in the solo Figaro circuit, the two-handed trans-Atlantic AG2R, the Twostar and Quebec-St Malo races. Her sailing experience also includes racing in the IMOCA Open 60 circuit and ORMA 60ft trimaran circuit.

“My experience in the French and Anglosaxon sailing worlds will help me to optimise my support to skippers willing to enter the Barcelona World Race, whether it is from securing sponsorship, finding a co-skipper or finding a boat. It is an exciting challenge and I particularly enjoy this concept of bringing the two worlds of short-handed and crewed sailing together – I know each of them very welland I know that each discipline has its strengths and weaknesses so combining the two will open up a new realm of competition, and will probably enable to showcase some of the up-and-coming talents,”said Christine Salén.

Alongside the work for the Barcelona World Race, Christine will continue to run the fast-growing Archipelago Raid organised by Atlant Ocean Racing.http://www.archipelagoraid.com/

Welcome On Board (Vincent Borde and Caroline Muller)
Job description: PR and Media (France) / Commercial Support for the French teams
French PR agency, Welcome On Board, was established in 1994 by sailor and media specialist Vincent Borde. His knowledge of the sport and his relationship with the sailors, quickly allowed Welcome on Board to establish themselves in the world of press and sponsor relations in the sport of sailing in France. In 2001 Caroline Muller joined the agency based in Lorient to work on projects including Sill (Roland Jourdain/Open 60 programme including 2000/01 and 2004/05 Vendée Globe); Brocéliande (Alain Gautier, winner 1992/93 Vendée Globe, skipper 60ft trimaran Foncia); Groupe SCE (Armel Le Cléach winner of 2003 La Solitaire du Figaro). They are currently working for Groupama (Franck Cammas’ trimaran programme); Crepes Whaou! (Franck-Yves Escoffier 50ft multihull programme); Bostik (Charles Caudrelier Figaro programme) and Theolia (Robert Nagy Figaro programme). In addition, the agency organised the 2005 IB Group Challenge for the ORMA 60ft trimaran circuit.

“The Barcelona World Race is an exciting prospect for French sailors, French media and the French public. It takes place one year before the Vendée Globe – one of France’s biggest sporting events – and the Barcelona World Race will set the stage so both the media and the public will be very interested to follow the progress of the sailors in this new two-handed event. Welcome On Board has established good relations with the media and with the sailors, and we aim to deliver the best results we can for the key stakeholders in this race – the sailors, the sponsors and the media,” said Caroline Muller.
