LESS THAN 48 HOURS TO GO!

Skippers Guillermo Altadill and Jonathan McKee have started to enjoy the atmosphere in the run-up to the Barcelona World Race. With just 48 hours to go to their departure from Barcelona all 18 skippers gathered for a group photograph and press conference where they had the opportunity to talk about the 25,000-mile challenge to come.

Guillermo and Jonathan had the opportunity to answer questions about their expectations for the non-stop round the world race that starts on Sunday 11 November at 1300 hours local time.

For Guillermo, participating in a race that starts and finishes in Barcelona has a lot of personal significance. "I learned to sail on Optimists on the Moll de la Fusta and to be there once more after 35 years is a little bit like closing the circle. That is the sentimental part of it.

But for the race itself I feel like I have a great responsibility on me in the next three months. Firstly for the wonderful boat I am sailing, then for my exceptional companion and also to have a sponsor like Estrella Damm, whom I am so grateful to for what they have given me, have trusted in me, and are supporting me with this project.

Jonathan McKee, Estrella Damm: "I'll tell you when I come back how prepared I am. Obviously you do the best you can to get ready for a situation like this. But in the end this is a race and a race is something I've been doing my whole life. For me it's a great honour to be able to be here with these guys, who are at the very top of this sport. To be able to compete in the same race as them is a great honour."

For his part, American Jonathan McKee has no doubts about talking part in the Barcelona World Race, his race around the world: ""I'll tell you when I come back how prepared I am. Obviously you do the best you can to get ready for a situation like this. But in the end this is a race and a race is something I've been doing my whole life. For me it's a great honour to be able to be here with these guys, who are at the very top of this sport. To be able to compete in the same race as them is a great honour."

In the afternoon the skippers went off to pack the few personal belongings they will take with them for what is expected to be around an 80-day passage.

This evening the sailors will take part in the official opening ceremony and will be presented to the public, while a host of friends and former colleagues have also come to greet the sailors and wish them luck for the enduring race that is to come.
