Day 9: Estrella Damm searches for wind and finds an on board surprise
After days of light winds there has been a shake up in the Barcelona World Race rankings, bumping Estrella Damm down into sixth overall, a result of being stuck in a very large windless patch just north of the Canary Islands.
However, today things have begun to improve for Estrella Damm skipper Guillermo Altadill and co-skipper Jonathan McKee and the teams are once again making progress, averaging around 10 knots of boat speed today while some of their rivals stood still in the water.

While still in sixth overall Estrella Damm has improved somewhat on her position at the end of yesterday and currently hoped to reel in Hugo Boss who hold a 17-mile lead over the Spanish boat and are only 40 miles away from a podium place. Spirits on the IMOCA Open 60 were high today as the Spanish-American team, with Guillermo sending this report back from the boat:
"Today I was looking for the tool box in the middle of the chaos of bags stacked on the starboard side. Moving the bags, I found a bag with few cans of Estrella Damm beer and some bags of good Spanish jamon (ham) that were waiting for some hungry man!
"I took both beer and jamon on deck. I stacked myself on the windward deck-rail, comfortably seated on top of the sails and I started the party. 17 knots of wind, 22 degrees, sun, beer and jamon. Later maybe a siesta..today is my day off. By the way, I forget why I was looking for a tool!"
