In full breeze the battle of the Cape Verde Islands begins, with Estrella Damm attempting a comeback as she gains miles on the leaders and moves up a place into seventh.
Jonathan McKee explains: "It feels great to have made some gains. Making gain is a really pleasant thing. We're had a few really tough days with things not really going our way so being rewarded feels great."
Currently sailing in full Trade Winds, blowing from the Northeast, Estrella Damm has today gained 33 miles on the race leaders and is closing in on the back of the fleet. While skipper's Guillermo Altadill and Jonathan McKee still have a lot of ground to make up they have managed to pass Tenemos II and have put five miles between the two boats. They will now watch the boats ahead to see what the wind is doing at the front of the fleet, which may help them to make the best tactical and navigational decisions.
Current race leader Paprec Virbac, currently 229 miles ahead of Estrella Damm has decided to navigate through the Islands while PRB in second has opted to sail just to the north of the Cape Verdes. Estrella Damm will leave her options open and make her final decision on which boat to follow, in the morning.
Estrella Damm is now charging along, enjoying similar conditions to the rest of the fleet and today have managed to gain back some ground. Managing speeds of 12-17 knots Guillermo and Jonathan have been helming one of the fastest boats in the fleet today.
Once past the Cape Verde Islands the fleet will approach the doldrums, which are predicted to be more favourable to the sailors than currently anticipated. However, once in the doldrums it is expected that the fleet will once again condense. If Estrella Damm can make up some distance now, she has a strong chance to being able to join the fleet in a good position as they reach the doldrums, so for Estrella Damm there is all to play for!
