Day 23: Time for reflection on Estrella Damm
Calm and steady wind conditions continued overnight for Estrella Damm and her skippers Guillermo Altadill and Jonathan McKee who are now sailing in lighter winds that the race leaders. Different weather has cost the Spanish-American team another good handful of miles, increasing their distance to the leaders to 841 miles. While the leaders has slipped further away, Estrella Damm still reindexs in touch with the pack just ahead and is about 60 miles behind seventh placed Mutua Madrilena.
Overnight, while on watch, Jonathan McKee was able to reflect on the world around him. "The night watches can be rather long, and many a sailor has devised different methods of passing the time. My latest consists of continuing to add another tea bag to each mug of tea, without taking out the previous one. By the end of my watch there may be three or four in there. The tea gets nice and strong, but it actually gets kind of hard to drink since the top is clogged up. Now these are not always the same types of tea either, so you get some unusual combinations. I am sure tea connoisseurs would be aghast.
"Last night a tiny sea horse washed into the tunnel where all the ropes lead from the mast to the cockpit. I was doing a routine inspection for flying fish, since a few of them usually get stuck in there, when I find this delicate little creature, who is actually quite cute. It's incredible all the nature that surrounds us, without us always knowing it's there.
"Every day is a bit better." McKee said. "Every mile counts so we're still focused on going fast and looking at our tactical options...but with it so stable right now, it's more about looking ahead and preparing for the future and trying to ensure we have all the capabilities possible for the next stage of the race.
