Temenos II at the Horn tomorrow morning

No real surprises as regards the weather for Temenos II today. The scenario evoked by Michèle yesterday seems to have become a reality. Temenos II has reindexed ahead of the front in weak W’ly winds, powerless to prevent a comeback by the Spanish pursuer. It is with relief that the two co-skippers saw a line of squalls shaping up on the horizon at noon. Even though it isn’t really a proper front as such, this band of clouds is enabling them to pick up the pace bound for the legendary rock. Too slow for the duo’s taste, they are gradually getting closer to the Horn and you could sense a certain impatience from Michèle during today’s radio session, accompanied by a slight disappointment at the idea of making a rounding at night.

“It’s very wet and grey aboard. We saw a few little patches of blue sky this morning. We're slowly making headway to the Horn, but it has been dragging a little since yesterday. We have the wind right on our tail. We can't make a direct course so we have been forced to gybe. For two hours conditions have improved. We’re making headway with a line of squalls from the South. It isn't very wide, around fifty miles. We hope that it will move forward with us as far as the Cape. The strength of the wind varies with the passage of the clouds. It goes from 15 to 27 knots, which is forcing us to make a number of manœuvres, but by way of compensation we're making quite good progress. The breeze is stronger than the prevailing wind forecast on zone and is enabling us to make better headway than we thought.

The front should make the Horn virtually the same time as us. The wind will strengthen at the approach to the cape. It may well gust up to 25, 30 knots. We should accelerate a little but we’ll have to be vigilant. With the proximity of land and its effect on the breeze, we can expect some unpredictable acceleration in the wind, which is likely to increase in gusts rather than gradually. With the compression of the coming front, we're likely to have a fairly rough passage around the Horn. We're likely to make our rounding tomorrow night at 0900 UT. It's a shame as I'd have loved to have seen it but not to the extent that I'd envisage easing off the pace!"
