New York to Barcelona Race Starts Sunday
5 Open Class 60 Extreme Race Boats Start off Dennis Conner's North Cove at 12 noon
Trans-Atlantic racing returns to New York Harbor on Sunday, June 1 when the New York to Barcelona Race gets underway.
This race is being organized by Sir Keith Mill's Open Sports Management. It will involve five Open Class 60 yachts, some of the most technically advanced ocean racing yachts in the world. These boats will sail double-handed across the Atlantic Ocean.
The race starts off Dennis Conner's North Cove in Lower Manhattan. This is the great mega-yacht marina located in Battery Park City. The marina has a constant array of boats and events and helps make this Manhattan's most exciting waterfront community.
The race will start at 12 noon on Sunday, June 1. It can be viewed by the public from the beautiful waterfront esplanade. The starting line will be directly off the marina in front of Brookfield Place in Lower Manhattan.
The Veteran Corps of Artillery will be bringing NYC's howitzer to start the race. This is the same cannon used to start the NYC Marathon.
The start of the race will be officiated by Manhattan Yacht Club which is based out of North Cove. The club also officiated the KRYS Ocean Race in July 2012, the last trans-Atlantic Race to start from the harbor.
"One mission of our club is to make NY Harbor a sailing capital like it was in the 1800s," said Michael Fortenbaugh, Commodore of Manhattan Yacht Club. "We are very honored that Sir Keith Mills and his team have brought this exciting race to New York City."
Some Trans-Atlantic races start out in the ocean away from public view. The NY-Barcelona Race continues the efforts by Manhattan Yacht Club to bring these great spectacles to the public. This will be the third trans-Atlantic Race to start from the Battery Park City esplanade where people and press can see.
From the start off North Cove, the yachts will sail down to the Statue of Liberty, round a buoy and sail back to the starting line. Then they will pass by the starting line a second time before heading off on their extreme journey across the Atlantic Ocean.
"We appreciate the support of our partners, Battery Park City Authority and the US Coast Guard Sector NY as well as other harbor operators who help us showcase our city to the world," stated Commodore Fortenbaugh.
"The sailing community would like to thank Governor Andrew M. Cuomo and BPCA President Shari Hyman for their support of North Cove which brings these world class events to our city," continued Fortenbaugh.
"We would also like to thank USCG Sector Commander CAPT Gordon Loebl and Chief of Waterways Management LCDR Donna Leoce for facilitating this race to start from the Manhattan esplanade where it is most accessible to the public," continued Fortenbaugh. "The support of the USCG helps us improve the world-wide image of New York Harbor."

New York Harbor has been undergoing a recreational renaissance for the past two decades. Every year, more and more sailboats take to the waters and photos of our skyline with sailboats appear in the press and social media. New York City may someday rival Sydney Harbor for the world's most vibrant waterfront which combines industry, transportation and recreation.
New York Harbor is more accessible than ever to the public. There are more and more charter boats as well as educational organizations. Manhattan Sailing School
teaches sailing to the public and is now the country's largest adult sailing school and located right at North Cove.
