Louis Vuitton and the 32nd America's Cup come together in Paris

1983 marked the beginning of what has been a long and mutually beneficial relationship between Louis Vuitton and the America’s Cup. That was the year the skipper of a French challenger, Bruno Troublé, persuaded Louis Vuitton to support the challenger selection series, what we now know as the Louis Vuitton Cup.

On Thursday evening, the ‘Road to Valencia’ tour was in Paris and the Louis Vuitton store on the Champs-Elysées was the central attraction. From the street, pedestrians could look at the flagship Louis Vuitton store and see enormous images from the racing to date projected on the building.

Inside, the top floor has been dedicated to hosting a photo exhibition featuring the work of top yachting photographers, past and present. ‘Wind and Sails: the legend of the America’s Cup and Louis Vuitton Cup’ is the latest feature at the Espace Louis Vuitton.
“We have organised many exhibitions about the history of the America’s Cup in the past, but for this, we wanted to take an emotional look at the America’s Cup over the years. So we selected three photographers from the past along with three modern ones, including Carlo Borlenghi, the official photographer of the 32nd America’s Cup,” says Troublé, describing the exhibition.

“The exhibition begins as soon as you come off the elevator. There’s the famous picture by Beken of the Cup boat with Britannia in the background and a lot of wind. The photo is backlit and it is really spectacular…We have plenty of photos were you don’t even see the boats. You might see the shadow from the sails or a close-up of the keel bulb and many people know it is beautiful, but don’t quite know what it is…but it’s the America’s Cup; just a different point of view.”

The exhibition runs until April 16th, the first day of racing for the 11 challengers in Valencia for the latest edition of the Louis Vuitton Cup. ‘Wind and Sails’ is open to the public and entrance is free.
