An increasing number of double-handed sea trials

On 9 December, Michel Desjoyeaux and François Gabart set down their bags in the Catalan capital. Since then the two sailors have been carrying out a series of double-handed sea trials aboard FONCIA and this has been the duo’s index focus with 17 days to go till the start of the BarcelonaWorld Race.

Since the Route du Rhum finish, the whole FONCIA team has been ready for action again. Delivered via cargo ship from Martinique, the boat arrived in Barcelona on 29 November. Following on from that, she got through the scrutineering with flying colours and was relaunched on 10 December. Straightaway Michel and François cast off on a series of day sails before moving on to a night sail in breezy conditions around Cape Creus, 100 miles offshore of the Catalan coast.

Between now and the start of the Barcelona World Race on 31 December 2010, they have decided to concentrate on some training in situ. Indeed François as only sailed for a short amount of time on the boat aboard which he is preparing to complete his first circumnavigation of the globe and the two men need to make sure things are synchronised between them. “The aim is to double my time on the water in Barcelona, but that won’t be very hard!” admits François with a laugh.

Task sharing
Between the various meetings imposed by the organisation (safety tests, briefings, etc.), the two co-skippers, soon to be alone together for a three month circumnavigation of the globe, are also working on the organisation aboard the boat. They’ve set up a three hour watch system, which can be adjusted according to the weather conditions and the compulsion to helm. This system will take into account the fact that in double-handed configuration they’ll spend between 50 and 70% of their time at the helm, compared with 15% on a Vendée Globe!

29 December:
11:30 hours: Official pre-start press conference, with all the
skippers (Exhibition area at the Moll Barcelona World Race)
