The final event of the 2017 Melges 24 European Sailing Series will be hosted by Associazione Velica Alto Verbano (AVAV) and supported by Luino Town Council and the Chamber of Commerce of Varese. The race will be for the trophy dedicated to Flavio Favini’s, 2007 and 2013 Melges 24 European and 2014 Melges 24 World Champion, father. Also the perpetual trophies of the Melges 24 European Sailing Series, in hold of 2016 winners Italian Andrea Racchelli’s ALTEA and Corinthian Miles Quinton’s GILL RACE TEAM, will find new holders there.

Both current leaders of the overall and Corinthian divisions – Miles Quinton’s GILL RACE TEAM with Geoff Carveth on the helm and Marco Zammarchi’s TAKI 4 with Bertola-Fossati – have entered already. Some of the best teams in the class will be challenging from Italy – current world champion Gian Luca Perego’s MAIDOLLIS with Fracassoli-Fonda and the winner of the 2016 European Sailing Series Andrea Racchelli’s ALTEA. Also, the winner of the pre-ultimate event in Medemblik, Hungarian FGF SAILING TEAM with Robert Bakoczy at the helm is one candidate for the final podium place in Luino. It’s great to see many German entries and Mike Goldfarb’s WARCANOE from U.S. coming to Luino. See the current entry list here

Flavio Favini with AVAV is happy to host the Melges 24 international fleet in Luino: „We are getting ready for our Melges 24 end of the season Classic, the Coppa Lino Favini. Again, we will have an honour of hosting the Swiss Nationals, the Italian and European circuit finals. We are proud to have been chosen once again by my favourite class to be the final event of a wonderful season. We promise to do our best to match the high level of Melges 24 class and to make you feel at home here at AVAV. We are pleased to invite you to Luino, October 13-15, to race and have a good time after sailing with us!“

The busy season of the Melges 24 European Sailing Series 2017 started in Portoroz, Slovenia in April followed by the second regatta in Riva del Garda, Italy in May and the third in Marstrand, Sweden in June. Fourth event, the most important title event of the year – the World Championship – was held in Helsinki, Finland in August and the fifth event in Medemblik, the Netherlands, in September.

2017 Melges 24 European Sailing Series 15.09.2017

2017 Melges 24 European Sailing Series
Medemblik – Day 1

September 15, 2017 – Medemblik, the Netherlands – Medemblik, the Netherlands – Penultimate event of the 2017 Melges 24 European Sailing Series brought the Melges 24 fleet to Medemblik, the Netherlands, where during the Delta Lloyd Open Dutch Championship also the Melges 24 Dutch Champions will be found out over the weekend of September 15-17. Hungarian FGF SAILING TEAM (HUN728) with Robert Bakoczy in helm did not leave much chance to the competitors winning all three races on the first day of the event.

When the forecast for Friday was quite sad with lots of rain and quite chill temperatures, then the sailors were happy to see that the reality was not as forecasted – the sun was shining since the morning and the SW wind was picking up with every race held reaching up to 19 knots with gusts during the third race of the day. Pretty flat waters with such wind delivered great conditions for Melges 24 boats making them surf the waves and achieve the speed the boat is really made for. Some rain at the end of the day did not ruin much the feeling of the wonderful racing day.

Nine boats from five countries made it to Medemblik for the fifth event of the series and even the number of the boats was small, the competition was great and sailing was close on the same race course with SB20s, Ynglings and J22s. Two laps on the windward-leeward course were sailed to complete the race of about 45-minute-duration.

According to the 2017 Melges 24 Worlds‘ ranking list the strongest team in the fleet was Hungarian FGF SAILING TEAM (HUN728) with Robert Bakoczy helming. Being sixth at the Worlds in Helsinki month ago they were strong and consistent enough to win all three races, and the second one with a huge gap ahead of the competitors. Local team of Eelco Blok, TEAM KESBEKE/SIKA/GILL (NED827) with Ronald Veraar helming – the Corinthian European Champion 2013 from Medemblik – finished two races as second and one as third, is second with seven points in total now. Miles Quinton’s GILL RACE TEAM (GBR694) – 2017 Worlds‘ second in the Corinthian division, with lately crowned SB20 World Champion Geoff Carveth in helm, scored today 5-3-4 and is on the third position just one point separating them from Akos Csolto’s Seven-Five-Nine at the moment.
