International Melges 24 Class Association Presents:
2018 Melges 24 European Sailing Series

December 8, 2017 – IM24CA – After some long evaluation, the management of the International Melges 24 Class Association announces the details of the 2018 Melges 24 European Sailing Series. From the first look at the calendar, it appears clear that the next one will be south and Italian oriented: in fact, five events out of six are planned to be held in Italy and the main reason for that is the Melges 24 European Championship to be held in Riva on Lake Garda in August.

The season will open in Tuscany, exactly in iconic Punta Ala, at the end of March (23-25) and will continue in Slovenia in April (27-29), with the fleet heading to Portoroz that is ready to welcome the Melges 24 class again after the successful experiences of the past few years. The 2018 Melges 24 European Sailing Series will then move on to the internal waters, with a double appointment on the Garda Lake: Torbole (June 29 up to July 1), where the Melges 24 international fleet will return after the 2012 Worlds won by Italian Gullisara helmed by reigning world champion Carlo Fracassoli with the record number of entries, and Riva del Garda (August 3-10) for the Melges 24 European Championship. The season will end with the Melges 24 Italian Championship planned to be sailed on the Como Lake (September 14-16), and with the Lino Favini Cup, also valid as Swiss Open Championship held in Luino (October 12-14).

Great satisfaction for the new calendar was expressed by Jens Altern Wathne, the Chairman of the International Melges 24 Class Association: „For the 2018 season the European Sailing Series will move more to the south and will have five events in Italy. Next year Portoroz, that has been the season opener for several years and a place where the sailors want to return to, will be the second stage in the series. Sailing on Garda Lake has been always well received by sailors across Europe. In August the European Championship will also be held on Garda Lake, in Riva del Garda and without any doubts will be a well attended event. Luino has been the ultimate event with great host and a good battle on the lake for a position on the final podium of the series.
Again, IM24CA has created a good series with a sensible logistic set up. We are looking forward to meet you in all of these great venues!“

Also Andrea Racchelli, the President of the Melges 24 Italian Class Association who with his ALTEA is one of the most experienced owner in the class, was happy about the idea to have more international events in Italy: „The Italian Melges 24 Class worked together with IM24CA to schedule the 2018 Melges 24 European Sailing Series. Was not easy to find good solutions, and of course, not everybody will be happy, but we believe that the series will help the class to grow in 2018 again.
With the European Championship on Lake Garda in August the best thing to do was to have regattas centralised in the Southern Europe to try to have less travel as possible. The goal for everybody is to have high quality racing in good venues with as much boats as possible. Starting in Punta Ala is great because usually in Tuscany there are great sailing and weather conditions in the beginning of spring. After that fleet will move to Portoroz for classic Slovenian act which has been always well attended place with a wonderful hospitality. After Portoroz you can move to the Garda Lake for three months. Torbole and Riva are super classic events: very funny to come back to Torbole after World Championship 2012. Riva for sure will host a superb European Championship for the Melges 24 fleet. Domaso in Como Lake is a new event, and is also considered as the Melges 24 Italian Nationals. If you have never been there, you will discover another beautiful place in Italy with very good sailing conditions. Finally we will have the classic Lino Favini Cup in Luino – everybody after many years know the superb hospitality we are treated there with.
As Italian class, we will give soon (possibly in early January) information about boat storage between the events, in particular between Punta Ala and Portoroz, near Garda between the three events, and after Garda till Domaso and Luino. It will be very easy to park the boat and travel by plane or only by car – this can help everybody to come and sail every single event.

Hope to see all Melges 24 sailors in Punta Ala and from the Italian Melges 24 Class best wishes for Merry Christmas and happy sailing in new year!“.

Besides the events of the 2018 European Sailing Series listed below, one more regatta will be held on Lake Garda – in Malcesine on May 18-20, the regatta of the Melges 24 Italian Series, which means altogether two pre-events for the European Championship to be held in August in Riva del Garda.
March 23-25 – Punta Ala ITA
April 27-29 – Portoroz SLO
June 29 – July 1 – Torbole, Lake Garda ITA
August 4 – 10 – Riva, Lake Garda ITA – Melges 24 Europeans
September 14 – 16 – Domaso, Lake Como ITA
October 12 – 14 – Luino, Lake Maggiore ITA
The Notice of Race of the series, online registration for the events and more detailed information about the logistics will be published in January.

Melges 24 Stories:
Gill Race Team – Twenty Years Of Passion For Melges 24

December 5, 2017 –

IM24CA – Melges 24 Corinthian European Champion 2016 and runner-up of the 2017 Melges 24 Worlds in Corinthian division-GILL RACE TEAM GBR694-has been also very consistent to win the Melges 24 European Sailing Series overall title twice and the Corinthian title once-achievement which no other team has done.

Having taken part of all the events of the 2017 Melges 24 European Sailing Series, not missing even one of the 51 sailed single races, Miles Quinton’s GILL RACE TEAM GBR694 (GRT) with Geoff Carveth in helm is the overall winner of the 2017 edition of the Melges 24 European Sailing Series, replicating their success of 2015. Besides Miles and Geoff in GRT were competing through the 2017 season Christian Birrell, Dan Schieber, Liam Gardener, Raffy Quinton, Ellie Meopham, Josh Grom Wilce, William Goldsmith. After six events that moved all over Europe, from Portoroz in Slovenia to Riva del Garda in Italy, Marstrand in Sweden, Helsinki in Finland, Medemblik in the Netherlands and Luino in Italy, the winners of the 2017 edition of the Melges 24 European Sailing Series were crowned in Luino in October.

Piret Salmistu, Administrator of the International Melges 24 Class Association (IM24CA) interviewed Miles Quinton, the owner of GRT and Vice Chairman Europe of the International Melges 24 Class Association after their successful 2017 season. Discovering Miles‘ passion for Melges 24 back to 1998, he is still having a lot of fun in the Melges24 racing against the best sailors in the world and has no plans for stopping yet!

The second part was interviewed by IM24CA Event Press Officer Mauro Melandri and can be watched as video edited by Zerogradinord. Miles is talking about their 2017 season and gives a preview about 2018.

IM24CA: When was your first experience with Melges 24? How was it? What was inspiring you?
Miles: My first experience in a Melges24 was leading up to the Worlds in 1998 in Torbay. We had seen the Melges24 at the London Boat Show in Earls Court and thought what an exciting boat it could be and our opportunity came when someone who I bought a boat at that show was looking to sell it without ever having sailed it. That boat was GBR334 The Woolwich co-owned between a group of sailing mates.

IM24CA: When the team of GRT was created? And how your crew has been changing?
Miles: I started my own campaign in 2006 with GBR654 and then added a US boat in 2007 GBR694. We became Gill Race Team four years ago when Geoff Carveth and I got together to sail the boat. I had heard of Geoff’s success in SB20 and many other classes so thought a partnership between us would be brilliant and so it has proven to be. Geoff brings not only great skill as a helmsman but also a chilled vibe that suits that way I like to sail. We have had a number of talented sailors in our team over the past years and this year we were lucky enough to have friends Christian Birrell, Dan Schieber and Liam Gardner join us.

IM24CA: What’s the background of your crew – on what boats you have sailed before Melges 24?
Miles: Christian our tactician won silver in Kiel in 470s, is a former Fireball World Champion and UK National Champion in 470, Merlin Rocket, Fireball, Enterprise, and GP14. Liam our jib trimmer was the first under 16 Firefly champion and competed at the Laser Radial World Championships in Japan, jib trim and Dan Schieber our bowman competed high level in 420 and 470 Class. Geoff and I are pleased to have such talented young guys sailing with us, as it’s built based on Geoff’s deep experience of winning three SB20 World Championships and numerous other titles.

IM24CA: The highlights of GRT have been Corinthian European Champion 2016 and 2017 Corinthian World‘ second and Overall 8th; European Sailing Series Overall winner 2015 & 2017, Corinthian division winner 2016. Which achievement is the most valuable for you and why?
Miles: We think that getting on the podium at a Europeans or Worlds is the highest achievement as it pits us against the very top teams from across Europe and the US, so wining the European Corinthian title in Hyeres was very special even though we missed out on the bronze medal overall. We have not yet won the World Corinthian title this year this is our medium term goal. We love the European Sailing Series as this is as different kind of test with six events in very different locations so it is a test of consistency throughout the season and we are very honoured to have won ESS overall twice and the Corinthian title once which no other team has done.

IM24CA: What venue and which event (they can be different) you have liked the most sailing Melges 24 and why?
Miles: This is a really hard choice as they are all amazing in different ways – we love the classics sailing a Melges 24 in Garda is always a very special experience and we are really looking forward to the Europeans there in 2018. However, we also love sailing in new locations so the Worlds in Helsinki was unique and we really enjoyed the sailing and the place.

IM24CA: What do you like about the Melges 24 class and boat?
Miles: What we like about Melges 24 is the standard of competition is so high and the boats are so much fun to sail that it is really a Grand Prix class sports boat that cannot be matched by other classes. When you win something in a Melges 24 event whether it is big or small you really feel like you have achieved something in sailing.

IM24CA: What have been your greatest and enjoyable moments sailing in Melges 24 class?
Miles: There have been so many great moments that it is difficult to pick just one! Coming 5th at the Worlds in Middelfart in Denmark was very special but if I had to pick one it would be winning the 2016 European Corinthian title on the last race of the last day of the championship by a count back it was so close.

IM24CA: What are your future plans on Melges 24?
Miles: We are still having a lot of fun in the Melges24 racing against the best sailors in the World and making good progress so we feel that there are a still some goals that we have yet to achieve that are possible! In the short term retaining our European Corinthian title against top teams like Italian TAKI 4 will be a challenge so we are focused on next year and then we will see what happens! We have no plans for stopping yet!

November 13, 2017 – IM24CA –

Melges 24 Corinthian World Champion two years in a row, the Corinthian winner of the 2017 Melges 24 European Sailing Series, missing only two Corinthian podiums of the series‘ events – this is how Italian team TAKI 4 has been printing their footsteps in the history of Melges 24 class.

Besides the owner of the TAKI 4 ITA778 team, Marco Zammarchi, following team members have been a part of their success story: Niccolò Bertola as a helmsman, Giacomo Fossati as a tactician, Giovanni Bannetta as main trimmer and Matteo de Chiara as a bowman. Since 2016 autumn TAKI 4 team has been supported by the coach Niccolò Bianchi, also former Melges 24 sailor. In the 20-year long history of the Melges 24 World Championships only two skippers have managed to win the title two years in a row: Vince Brun (USA) in 1998/1999 and Lorenzo Bressani (ITA) in 2010/2011. Now also in Corinthian division the title won by the same skipper two years in a row−Niccolò Bertola replicated his success of 2016 also at the 2017 Melges 24 Worlds in Helsinki, Finland.

Piret Salmistu, Administrator of the International Melges 24 Class Association (IM24CA) interviewed Marco Zammarchi, the owner of TAKI 4 after their successful 2017 season. The second part was interviewed by IM24CA Event Press Officer Mauro Melandri and can be watched as video edited by Zerogradinord.

IM24CA: When was your first experience with Melges 24? Share about your inspiration.
Marco: My very first experience with Melges 24 was in 2008 when Stefano, a very close friend who unfortunately does not have enough time to sail with us anymore, and I bought ITA 528, that we christened TAKI 3. Until then we had sailed in 470, soon to realize that we were too advanced to continue in that class, so we looked for a class that could guarantee us highly skilled competitors, performance and adrenaline – all in one.

IM24CA: When was TAKI 4 created? Have you been sailing with the same crew since the beginning?
Marco: After a couple of training seasons on Melges 24, we decided to try competing at a different level. That was the rational reason behind the purchase of ITA 778 TAKI 4. At that time Matteo and Giacomo were already part of the team. Niccolò joined us for the 2013 Europeans in Medemblik, while Giovanni started his experience with us in 2016, after Alessandro Saettone left the team to be fully involved in professional sailing.

IM24CA: What’s the background of your crew – on what boats have you sailed before Melges 24?
Marco: With exception of Giovanni (Snipe and ORC), all of us had experience in 470 class. To be clear, not everyone at the same level (me, for sure not).

IM24CA: What’s the meaning of TAKI 4 and from where does this name come from? From the image you have on the hull of your boat you can think of heartbeats?
Marco: It’s hard to describe. To be exact, it’s simply the nickname we gave to our 470 sailing coach.

IM24CA: The highlights of TAKI 4 have been: Corinthian World Champions 2016 and 2017 (overall 5th in 2017); Europeans 2016 Overall 7th and Corinthian 4th; the events of the European Sailing Series: June 2016 Attersee 1st overall and Corinthian; October 2016 Luino 5th overall and 1st Corinthian; May 2017 Riva 5th overall and 1st Corinthian; June 2017 Marstrand 1st overall and Corinthian. Which achievement is the most valuable for you and why?
Marco: In my opinion the title from the Helsinki Worlds is the most valuable for us. Also keeping in mind we were 5th in the overall ranking. On the other hand, we are also very proud to have won the Marstrand event.

IM24CA: How would you compare two Corinthian titles of the Worlds? What was harder for you and why?
Marco: It’s hard to say. Miami title was much unexpected, therefore everybody can understand our joy. However, the title in Helsinki was fantastic because we were afraid to fail and felt pressured to perform – it is always extreme in a competitive class like Melges 24. It is an unforgettable feeling and honour to listen the national anthem play for you!

IM24CA: How would you compare the venues and sailing conditions of 2016 and 2017 Worlds – what were your key factors for winning the title?
Marco: Both venues were marvellous! Miami was more exotic, considering sailing in the sun in December. Helsinki was exactly the opposite, offering us early spring conditions in August. We, Italians, like more sunny conditions. In all honesty we enjoyed both, Miami and Helsinki because of the excellent and challenging sailing conditions.

IM24CA: What do you like about the Melges 24 class and boat?
Marco: In my opinion Melges 24 offers an opportunity to sail with a very fast monohull boat in a very high competitive fleet. Just have a bad start of the race and see if what I’m saying is true or not.

IM24CA: What have been your greatest and most enjoyable moments sailing in Melges 24 class?
Marco: I have already mentioned the two victories at the World Championships, but believe me, every event leaves us with great memories and amazing breakthroughs because we are still in the learning phase.

IM24CA: What are your future plans on Melges 24?
Marco: Our future plans are to participate at the Italian Nationals next year and at the European Sailing Series events, trying to find new inspirations at the European Championship in Riva. In Riva we are already looking for an apartment for the entire month of July to practice as much as we can. Unfortunately we will not defend the title in British Columbia, reasons behind are the labour activities and budget.
About 2019, we will see… maybe we will come out with new TAKI 5!

NorAmTour 2017: ‚Mikey Likes It‘

Kevin Welch’s MIKEY(USA835) of Anacortes, Washington gave an unparalleled overall performance on the 2017 M24 NorAm Tour. Mikey likes this sport and sails with a very high level of intensity and joy that often accompanies those who deliver on race day. Of course, this accomplishment was no
t reached by chance. A couple centuries of collective crew commitment to the sport and the constant refinement of technique helped. Mikey was also tuned into Mother Nature who usually led them the right way up the course.

MIKEYwas followed by Michael Goldfarb’s WARCANOE (USA 825) of Seattle and Brian Porter’s FULL THROTTLE (USA849).
Wet Coast Sailing’s SUNNYVALE (CAN151) won the M24 NorAm Tour Corinthian Title for the second year in a row. A couple points back and 2nd in the Corinthian Division was KC Shannon’s SHAKA (USA801) of Atlanta. SHAKA, third place in the Corinthian Division for the Tour went to Kent Pierce’s AVERAGE WHITE BOAT (USA303) out of Santa Barbara.

Second classified in the open division of the circuit is FGF SAILING TEAM HUN728, winner of the last two events of the series, among which Lino Favini Cup that was concluded today in Luino, followed by the Corinthian world champion team of TAKI 4 ITA778. The boat by Marco Zammarchi with Niccolò Bertola in helm is also the winner of 2017 Melges 24 European Sailing Series in the Corinthian division, with GILL RACE TEAM at its back and Ukrainian entry BARMALEY UKR661 in third position.
Overall ranking of the 2017 Melges 24 European Sailing Series

Corinthian ranking of the 2017 Melges 24 European Sailing Series

The last day of racing in Luino, event valid also as Lino Favini Cup, brought many changes in the overall ranking: provisional leaders aboard MAIDOLLIS ITA854 were forced to withdraw from the day of racing because of their tactician Enrico Fonda being ill, and other top-teams slipped from podium positions because of the big wind shift and shortening the race course that affected the first race of the day. With a 12th and a 1st, FGF SAILING TEAM managed to get on top of podium, being awarded with Lino Favini Cup Perpetual Trophy and were crowned also as the Melges 24 Swiss champions, followed by the consistent Danish entry SOFFE DEN782 of Kim Christensen that never scored anything worse than a 6th in the whole series. Bronze medal in Lino Favini Cup goes to TAKI 4 that is also winner in the Corinthian division.

The Corinthian podium was not much affected by the unpredictable races of today, with TAKI 4 being followed by GILL RACE TEAM and Michael Tarabochia’s WHITE ROOM GER677 with Luis Tarabochia helming. Eddy Eich’s MUSTO RACING GER803 helmed by Kicker Schäfer, third after the races of yesterday, closed the event slipping into seventh position.
