Eighty-nine teams, including the fifty-five Corinthian teams, have been competing at the events of the Melges 24 European Sailing Series this year. The World Championship in this part of the world has created more excitement and rivalry, no doubt. Seven teams shipping their boats to Europe or renting a charter boat not only for the title event, but also for the other events, has been great and fostered stronger connections between different continents in Melges 24 family. Eighteen nations are represented in the series ranking having the biggest number of teams participating from Germany and Sweden, followed by Italy and Norway.

Forty-five single races have been sailed during five events with seven discards as according to the scoring after every sixth race sailed a discard will apply. The only team travelling to all events of the series is Miles Quinton’s GILL RACE TEAM from Great Britain with Geoff Carveth helming. The teams who have missing only one event are Italian TAKI 4, Hungarian FGF SAILING TEAM and SEVEN-FIVE-NINE, Danish UPUPUP, and Ukrainian BARMALEY.

Full Corinthian Ranking

The final event of the 2017 Melges 24 European Sailing Series will be hosted by Associazione Velica Alto Verbano (AVAV) and supported by Luino Town Council and the Chamber of Commerce of Varese. The race will be for the trophy dedicated to Flavio Favini’s, 2007 and 2013 Melges 24 European and 2014 Melges 24 World Champion, father. Also the perpetual trophies of the Melges 24 European Sailing Series, in hold of 2016 winners Italian Andrea Racchelli’s ALTEA and Corinthian Miles Quinton’s GILL RACE TEAM, will find new holders there.

Both current leaders of the overall and Corinthian divisions – Miles Quinton’s GILL RACE TEAM with Geoff Carveth on the helm and Marco Zammarchi’s TAKI 4 with Bertola-Fossati – have entered already. Some of the best teams in the class will be challenging from Italy – current world champion Gian Luca Perego’s MAIDOLLIS with Fracassoli-Fonda and the winner of the 2016 European Sailing Series Andrea Racchelli’s ALTEA. Also, the winner of the pre-ultimate event in Medemblik, Hungarian FGF SAILING TEAM with Robert Bakoczy at the helm is one candidate for the final podium place in Luino. It’s great to see many German entries and Mike Goldfarb’s WARCANOE from U.S. coming to Luino. See the current entry list here

Flavio Favini with AVAV is happy to host the Melges 24 international fleet in Luino: „We are getting ready for our Melges 24 end of the season Classic, the Coppa Lino Favini. Again, we will have an honour of hosting the Swiss Nationals, the Italian and European circuit finals. We are proud to have been chosen once again by my favourite class to be the final event of a wonderful season. We promise to do our best to match the high level of Melges 24 class and to make you feel at home here at AVAV. We are pleased to invite you to Luino, October 13-15, to race and have a good time after sailing with us!“

The busy season of the Melges 24 European Sailing Series 2017 started in Portoroz, Slovenia in April followed by the second regatta in Riva del Garda, Italy in May and the third in Marstrand, Sweden in June. Fourth event, the most important title event of the year – the World Championship – was held in Helsinki, Finland in August and the fifth event in Medemblik, the Netherlands, in September.

Melges24 European Sailing Series 18.09.2017

September 17, 2017 – Medemblik, the Netherlands –

2017 Melges 24 European Sailing Series Medemblik –

Final Day FGF Sailing Team Is Melges 24 Dutch Champion 2017

The final day of the Delta Lloyd Open Dutch Championship in Medemblik saw the last three races of the event for Melges 24 fleet and comparing to yesterday, no changes were made to the podium places. Hungarian FGF SAILING TEAM kept their track to victory, while Dutch Team KESBEKE/SIKA/GILL secured their second position and GILL RACE TEAM (GBR) was consistent enough to complete the podium as third.

This was an early morning for Melges 24 sailors in Medemblik as the racing for their course for rescheduled to start one hour earlier due to the face that the last race of yesterday was abandoned for another classes – SB20s, Ynglings and J22s – on the same race course. The morning in Medemblik was really quiet, but the wind was picking up by 10 am when the first start of the day was given to Melges 24s. In the wind of eight knots wind gusts of ten knots two races were sailed in fairly good conditions. For the start of third race the wind started to weaken already, but it was still a fair racing until the second part of the first downwind leg when there was hardly four knots wind left and the Race Committee led by Marcol de Klerk was forced to shorten the course and take the finish for Melges 24 fleet at the downwind gate. It was a fair decision as the gennakers were falling in and three boats decided not to finish that race due to the unreachable time limit.

FGF SAILING TEAM (HUN728) with Robert Bakoczy in helm added two bullets and one second place to their score today. In total of five bullets and three second places their scored eleven points as their worse place, yesterday’s 3rd, was discarded.

It was a close racing between 2017 Worlds‘ sixth – winning Hungarians and local Eelco Blok’s TEAM KESBEKE/SIKA/GILL (NED827) with Ronald Veraar in helm. Six points separated local team from the winners with final score of 2-2-3-2-1-(6)-4-1-2. The helmsman Ronald Veraar was really happy with the racing and with the job of Race Committee. „Although we had only nine boats here, it was great that Race Committee kept the starting line short and race course short and gave us more up and down sailing. In frank, it was close racing and a lot of spot changing. We finished all within one minute almost each time. The level was quite close to each other except for FGF Sailing Team who was always a little bit in front. I was happy with our crew which was half new here as two members could not make it this time. The new guys sailed Melges 24 5-6 years ago and I was really happy how it went.“

Miles Quinton’s GILL RACE TEAM (GBR694) with Geoff Carveth helming had a battle to complete the podium with another Hungarian team – Akos Csolto’s SEVEN-FIVE-NINE (HUN759). When GILL RACE TEAM scored 5-3-4-1-3-3-5-4-(6) and eleven points was separating them from the second place, then Hungarian team finished the event five points behind as fourth.

Also David Pinner’s KISS (GBR645) was performing consistent and well to get higher placement than sixth, but the crew injury on the first day forced them cancel one race and today they were not lucky to finish the last race while the wind was dying and the finish line was far enough to end the race within time limit. Melges 24 fleet was lucky enough to end the racing just before heavy rain started, wind dropped dramatically and was too shifty to get the race started for other classes.

2017 Melges 24 European Sailing Series 16.09.2017

September 16, 2017 – Medemblik, the Netherlands –

2017 Melges 24 European Sailing Series Medemblik –

Day Two FGF Sailing Team Remains The Leader

September 16, 2017 – Medemblik, the Netherlands – Delta Lloyd Open Dutch Championship, considered as the penultimate event of the 2017 Melges 24 European Sailing Series, continued in Medemblik today. With another three races completed on the second day of the event Hungarian FGF SAILING TEAM with Robert Bakoczy in helm is keeping his leading position while there have been six races sailed and one discard came into play after fifth race.

Similarly to yesterday the weather forecast differed from the real life. Although heavy rain was about to show up since the morning, the sailors were happy to get two races sailed in wonderful conditions like yesterday – sunshine and wind of seven to ten knots made sailing fun and enjoyable. But while attempting to start race number six around 2 pm, the huge dark cloud covered the sky bringing some major wind shifts and heavy rain with it. The Race Committee of the Green course led by Marcol de Klerk was not able to start the last race of the day before waiting the wind to stabilize about one hour and fifteen minutes later. During the race in heavy rain the wind weakened, but also changed its direction quite a lot so that only Melges 24 fleet got their sixth race finished while the race was abandoned for the SB20s, Ynglings and J22s.

FGF SAILING TEAM (HUN728) with Robert Bakoczy in helm continued their consistent racing scoring the third place and two second places today. As after the fifth sailed race a discard came into play, the worse result to discard for Hungarian team was third place their score will be seven points in total. The helmsman Robert Bakoczy was happy commenting two racing days in Medemblik. „We have been sailing here before and the place and conditions are familiar to us. The weather could be better, but both today and yesterday we got some really great races in wonderful conditions. Three bullets yesterday made us especially happy, but our closest competitors – TEAM KESBEKE/SIKA/GILL and GILL RACE TEAM are very good too. There’s still one day to go and we are trying to be in front of them at the end of the event. This is a great competition here for us heading to the final event of the series to be held in Luino in October, where also Italian teams will be present to make competition more close and strong for the final positions in the Melges 24 European ranking.“

Eelco Blok’s TEAM KESBEKE/SIKA/GILL (NED827) with Ronald Veraar helming won one race today and scored also 2nd and 6th as the discard to the total score. Dutch team is currently runner-up and three points behind the leader. Miles Quinton’s GILL RACE TEAM (GBR694) winning the first race today and gaining also two third places, is lying on the third position with seven points separating the top three places.

For the final day of the event the racing has been rescheduled to start earlier – at 10 am. Check the Notice Board here. Two more races can be in store for Melges 24 fleet as the maximum number of races. The forecast is not so generous to deliver enough wind for tomorrow, but we’ll see in the morning.

2017 Melges 24 European Sailing Series 15.09.2017

2017 Melges 24 European Sailing Series
Medemblik – Day 1

September 15, 2017 – Medemblik, the Netherlands – Medemblik, the Netherlands – Penultimate event of the 2017 Melges 24 European Sailing Series brought the Melges 24 fleet to Medemblik, the Netherlands, where during the Delta Lloyd Open Dutch Championship also the Melges 24 Dutch Champions will be found out over the weekend of September 15-17. Hungarian FGF SAILING TEAM (HUN728) with Robert Bakoczy in helm did not leave much chance to the competitors winning all three races on the first day of the event.

When the forecast for Friday was quite sad with lots of rain and quite chill temperatures, then the sailors were happy to see that the reality was not as forecasted – the sun was shining since the morning and the SW wind was picking up with every race held reaching up to 19 knots with gusts during the third race of the day. Pretty flat waters with such wind delivered great conditions for Melges 24 boats making them surf the waves and achieve the speed the boat is really made for. Some rain at the end of the day did not ruin much the feeling of the wonderful racing day.

Nine boats from five countries made it to Medemblik for the fifth event of the series and even the number of the boats was small, the competition was great and sailing was close on the same race course with SB20s, Ynglings and J22s. Two laps on the windward-leeward course were sailed to complete the race of about 45-minute-duration.

According to the 2017 Melges 24 Worlds‘ ranking list the strongest team in the fleet was Hungarian FGF SAILING TEAM (HUN728) with Robert Bakoczy helming. Being sixth at the Worlds in Helsinki month ago they were strong and consistent enough to win all three races, and the second one with a huge gap ahead of the competitors. Local team of Eelco Blok, TEAM KESBEKE/SIKA/GILL (NED827) with Ronald Veraar helming – the Corinthian European Champion 2013 from Medemblik – finished two races as second and one as third, is second with seven points in total now. Miles Quinton’s GILL RACE TEAM (GBR694) – 2017 Worlds‘ second in the Corinthian division, with lately crowned SB20 World Champion Geoff Carveth in helm, scored today 5-3-4 and is on the third position just one point separating them from Akos Csolto’s Seven-Five-Nine at the moment.

Melges 24 World Championship in Helsinki, Finland in August was the fourth stage of the European series.

The current rankings of the 2017 Melges 24 European Sailing Series include the results of the thirty six single races completed during four events of the series taking into account six discards. Three teams have been travelling entire road trip of Slovenia-Italy-Sweden-Finland taking part of all four events so far – the same teams stand on top of the current overall ranking.

In overall ranking Italian TAKI 4 of Marco Zammarchi with Niccolò Bertola in helm has been in Top 10 of the overall division in all events of the 2017 series: 8th in Slovenia, 5th in Italy, 1st in Sweden and 5th in Finland.
