A Swiss yachtsman, who at the age of 49 is considered to be one of the most experienced sailors in the world! With four Whitbreads and a Vendée Globe (back in 2000-01) under his belt and 250,000 miles of ocean sailing, Dominique Wavre will clearly be one to watch for in this race around the three capes. He knows the way by heart! All the more so because this year, after a great 2nd place in the Transat (the English transatlantic race), it appears that the Swiss skipper is really on a flyer, having come back from that in top form!

A fine set of achievements
An experienced crewmember in round the world yachting (with a win in 1986), Dominique is one of the top Swiss ocean racing specialists. He excels in shorter racing events too, as he already has 8 Tour de France a la Voile races under his belt, four Solitaire du Figaro events, and to top it all he finished in a fine second place in the latter in 1990!

The pragmatic skipper –who is well known for his Swiss precision –is brimming over with talent. Continuing with single-handed sailing, it was his participation in the last edition of the Vendée Globe, for which he built the well-designed, powerful Finot-Conq, that was to signal his entry into Open 60 racing, which he has stuck with ever since. During this first single-handed circumnavigation, Dominique lost ground in the Southern Seas and got left behind by the leaders. But he was not going to give up and fought hard, even complaining that the big seas were much too calm for his tastes. But then there was the Atlantic. On his way back up, he was to encounter a sailor´s nightmare: close-hauled sailing in light airs that got him nowhere. In spite of these setbacks, Dominique was over the moon on completing the round the world trip, a feat, which only the top sailors achieve.

For this next edition he has put in a lot of work on his preparation and clearly knows his boat well enough to push her hard. Since he announced his return to the racing scene, Dominique has taken part in most of the events in the racing calendar. His recent success in The Transat, face to face with some other serious contenders now taking part in the Vendée Globe, confirms that he is in with a serious chance of being up there with the leaders…
