Raced the Transat 6-50 2001. The Single-handed Transatlantic race from La Rochelle to Salvador (Brazil) in 6.5m boats. 11th place in the 65 boat fleet. First girl in to Brazil.

Sam Davies History
I have sailed ever since I was a baby. When I was born my parents replaced their powerboat with a 28-foot sailing boat, as it was safer. Our family spent every weekend and holiday that I can remember cruising the Solent, West Country, North Brittany and Biscay. That is how I learnt to sail and respect the sea.
As I grew up I spent more and more weekends and holidays racing both dinghies and yachts. In my gap year I worked for the yacht designer Rob Humphreys. Then I went to Cambridge University to study Engineering, where I earned a Masters degree. Still sailing every holiday, I also took to the water in a different manner – rowing. I was Boat Club captain of Lady Margaret Boat Club and trained with the Cambridge Lightweight Women.

During my university holidays I clocked up some sailing miles, taking part in several big events including the Fastnet Race, the Mumm36 World Championships and the women’s keelboat Worlds. I had also met and sailed with Tracy Edwards on her 92-foot catamaran „Royal & SunAlliance“. I agreed to go and sail with her team as soon as I had finished University. So, the day after my last exam I left Cambridge and flew to New York to join RSA on the transatlantic record attempt.

Our goal on board „Royal and SunAlliance“ was to challenge for the Jules Verne Trophy, sailing non-stop around the world. We were dismasted in the Southern Ocean, between New Zealand and Cape Horn, and had to limp to Chile under jury rig. Although we did not achieve ‚the big one‘, we sailed many miles in the year preceding the challenge, including several world record attempts: Transatlantic (fastest all girl crew), Round Britain and Ireland, Round the Isle of Wight and we hold the following two World Sailing Records:

1. Cross channel (Cowes – St. Malo) 6 hrs and 45 min, averaging 23 knots – the fastest ever world offshore sailing record.
2. Australia – New Zealand. Since then, I have worked as shore crew for Ellen MacArthur. I sail in Shirley Robertson’s Match Racing team, we were ranked number one in the World Rankings for 1999 and recently came 4th at the World Championships. I am also the bowman for several top-level racing boats, including Chris Little’s Corel 45 „Bounder“, Farr 40s, Mumm 30s, and a Solent based 50 footer „Mandrake.“ When I worked for Ellen, I began to think about doing some solo sailing myself. My little thoughts soon became reality as I took over as skipper for the Mini Transat boat „Aberdeen Asset Management“ – a 21ft „ocean racing skiff“ designed for solo and double-handed sailing.

I took part in a year of build up races and qualification mileage for the Transat race itself. Results include 3rd – Mini Barcelona 2000, 2nd – Roma x 2, 9th – Select 6.5, 5th – Mini Pavois (70 boat fleet.) I then raced the Mini Transat (now known as Transat 6.50) and was 11th overall in the 60 boat fleet, from La Rochelle (France) to Salvador (Brazil) via a stop over in Lanzarote (Canaries.) I was the first girl to reach Brazil, and third non-French skipper overall.

I then joined an Olympic campaign, sailing with Shirley Robertson and Inga Leask in a Yngling, aiming for Olympic Gold at Athens in 2004. Although I loved the training and technical development, sailing the Yngling was not for me and I left Shirley and Inga sail with Sarah Ayton.

This co-incided with Tracy Edwards buying the old „Club Med“ and re-naming her „Maiden 2“ to attempt some world records, this time with a mixed crew. Brian Thompson was the skipper. I joined as crew, helm and in charge of the deck gear and some rigging. We broke 4 records in 4 months – not bad! They were the Antigua – Newport record, the 24 hour record, the Round Britain and Ireland record and the Cross Channel record.

My aims in sailing are the Jules Verne Trophy, the Figaro (more solo racing!), but by far the greatest aim is to always enjoy my sailing and achieve the best I can in whatever project I take part in.
